Commission Recommends Denial of Gas Station

The Canton Planning Commission voted to recommend denial of a request to annex land that would be used for a convenience store with gas sales.

The Canton Planning Commission on Monday voted to recommend denial of a plan to annex land that would be used for a convenience store with gas sales.

The body voted 4-1, with commission member Richard Kemp opposing, a request from a Macon-based developer to annex roughly nine acres at the corner of Highway 20 and Brooke Park Drive to build a Flash Foods convenience store.

The store would sit directly across from Canton Marketplace.

The Canton City Council will consider the case during its Dec. 5 meeting. Jim Rollins of The Summit Group, the developer who submitted the petition, is also eyeing the possibility of constructing the store on the site of the old Bell's Store in the Buffington community.

That plan has also drawn the ire of residents who have expressed opposition to Rollins' plans. Those residents have also mobilized to create a petition to save the historic store.
