After years of managing declining property tax revenue, the upswing is welcome news for Cherokee leaders.
The news of an increase in Cherokee County property tax values is not falling on deaf ears among local leaders. The county learned last week that its gross tax digest grew to nearly $7.4 billion in 2013, up from $7.2 billion in 2012. Cherokee County Chief Appraiser John Adams said after exemptions, the total net taxable digest is up by 3 percent for the county and up 2.8 percent for the school portion of property taxes. County Commission Chair Buzz Ahrens said he was "very pleased" with the initial results overall. The county was hoping to see either a 1 or 2 percent increase in property values, "so the out-of-the box 3 percent is a great message and starting point." The man who the Georgia Bureau of Investigators believe shot and killed his parents died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Cherokee last week.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says the Union County murder suspect involved in a shoot out with Cherokee Sheriff's deputies ended his own life last week in Holly Springs. According to the Cherokee Ledger-News, Anthony Payne died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The Ledger confirmed with GBI Spokesman John Bankhead that Payne also received a gunshot wound to the arm when a Cherokee sheriff's deputy fired when the suspect did not drop his weapon. The GBI believes Payne, 34 of Blairsville shot and killed both of his parents, Charles Payne, age 59, and Louise Payne, age 67, at their home on Nottley Dam Road in Blairsville. Anthony Payne, who was shot and killed by Cherokee Sheriff's deputies early Friday, allegedly shot and killed his parents in Blairsville.
The parents of a Union County double homicide suspect fatally shot by Cherokee Sheriff's Office deputies were killed by their own son. That's according to preliminary autopsy results released Friday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Complete autopsy results are pending at the GBI's Medical Examiner's Office. The GBI's regional office in Cleveland around 5:45 p.m. Thursday received a call for assistance from Union County Sheriff Mack Mason after his deputies discovered the bodies of Charles Payne, age 59, and Louise Payne, age 67, at a home at 1098 Nottley Dam Road in Blairsville. After receiving a lookout alert from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the suspect was spotted near Holly Springs late Thursday evening.
UPDATE (10:50 a.m.): According to Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Jay Baker, deputies received substantial assistance from the Canton, Woodstock, and Holly Springs police departments during the search. Baker said the departments were extremely helpful when canvassing Swan Lane for the suspect. Homeowners' associations along the Sixes Road corridor will hold a meeting for residents to learn more about WellStar's plans to possibly build a facility in Holly Springs.
While WellStar Health System has decided not to proceed with obtaining a green light from the state for a free-standing emergency department in Holly Springs, that isn't stopping residents from organizing to inform their neighbors about the company's plans. A meeting has been set for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Liberty Elementary School for residents who live in BridgeMill and along Sixes Road to learn about what WellStar would like to do with roughly 62 acres on the southwest corner of Sixes Road and I-575.
