Cherokee Manager To Chair Bob Barr's Congressional Campaign

County Manager Jerry Cooper will chair Barr's campaign in Cherokee County.

A familiar Cherokee County face has been tapped to help Bob Barr get elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Barr's campaign on Monday announced County Manager Jerry Cooper will serve as the campaign chair in Cherokee County. "Jerry is a key leader in Cherokee County, well known as a man of character and integrity, and I am glad to have him as a part of my campaign team," Barr wrote on this website. Cooper said he's looking forward to the new challenge.  "I am honored that Bob Barr has placed his confidence in me to be part of his campaign team," he added.  A credentialed International City/County Management Association member, Cooper has both a bachelor's and master's degree in public administration from the University of Arkansas. …

I don't care whether Jerry Cooper is a campaign manager for Bob Barr or anyone else. What I do care about is that Jerry Cooper was the Cherokee County Manager during the entire Jimmy Bobo fiasco and it was his department that had been assigned the responsibility of overseeing the financial dealings. Mr. Cooper failed miserably and should be held accountable for his actions and lack thereof!   more ›

Should Chip Rogers Have Presided Over Republican Convention?

The former state senator and current Georgia Public Broadcasting employee was asked to serve as the chair of the 11th Congressional District convention held in Marietta last weekend.

A former Georgia state senator made a scheduled appearance into the political arena last weekend.  Former Sen. Chip Rogers of Woodstock served as the convention chair of the 2013 Georgia Republican Party 11th Congressional District Convention held at Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta last Saturday.  Rogers received many accolades from Republicans in the district, and several folks attending the convention expressed their feelings on the former senator's Facebook profile.  "Kudos to Chip Rogers for his masterful chairmanship at yesterday's District Convention," wrote former Cherokee County Republican Party Chair Bob Rugg in the Cherokee's Republican Party Facebook group wall. "The task is always made more difficult when attempting …

Petruzielo: State Budget Numbers Given To Cherokee Chamber "Inaccurate"

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzielo is questioning the accuracy of numbers State Rep. Calvin Hill provided to the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce's board of directors.

Cherokee Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzielo has raised concerns about numbers distributed by State Rep. Calvin Hill (R-Hickory Flat) that say the state has increased funding to education. In a memo, Petruzielo contradicts the report Hill distributed to the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce's Board of Directors that no reductions to Quality Basic Education funding, or QBE, were made for Georgia's fiscal year 2014 budget. Petruzielo writes in his memo that the Cherokee County School District recently learned it will have to once again swallow $24.8 million in austerity cuts for the 2013-14 school year. He also notes the county's equalization grant, which totals $500,000 has been eliminated. The superintendent goes on to say …

Cherokee School District Custodian: "I'm Begging For My Job"

The Cherokee County School Board heard from two custodians who oppose the district privatizing its grounds and custodial services.

Two custodians pleaded with the Cherokee County School Board to keep its grounds and custodial employees in-house. The board on Thursday took comments from two men, William Exton and Ronald Carey, who opposed the board's decision to explore privatizing both grounds and custodial services.  Exton, who said he's aware of the economic downturn's impact on the Cherokee County School District, added he isn't seeing the district consider cutting salaries of school administrators or central office employees. Carey, another custodian, added he was "begging for my job." The possible outsourcing, he added, was "disgusting to me."  "They are not the cause of this board having a problem with their economic situation," he added of his co-workers.  …

Should Gov. Nathan Deal Take Sides on Integrated Prom?

A nonprofit organization is taking Gov. Nathan Deal to task for his neutral position on teens in Wilcox County, Ga., organizing an integrated prom.

Better Georgia, a progressive nonprofit organization, is criticizing Gov. Nathan Deal for "not taking sides" on an effort by four teenage girls to organize its first integrated prom in Wilcox County, Georgia. Gov. Nathan Deal was asked last week whether he'd supported the high school students' efforts, which he declined through a spokesman.  "This is a leftist front group for the state Democratic party and we're not going to lend a hand to their silly publicity stunt," Spokesman Brian Robinson said

Deal needs to get his head focused on economic issues and shut up. Having said that he really cant do much for the economy either since he was bankrupt and obviously cant manage his own finances. Im a republican and while the guy seems like an ok person, he is no leader and no example. We could have elected Herman Cain on write in and this would have all been handled by now and we could all be …   more ›

Senate Committee Endorses Tax Credit Transparency Bill

The committee's vote comes weeks after an Atlanta education policy group suggested some scholarship money was used at a Cherokee County religious school that ban gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual students.

The Georgia Senate Education and Youth Committee on Monday unanimously endorsed legislation intended to strengthen a state tax credit scholarship program that has been the target of weeks of criticism. Senate Bill 243 now goes to the Senate for a full vote. If passed, it would "give preferences to students with financial needs," according to a copy of the legislation available on the Georgia General Assembly's website. The committee's vote comes weeks after an Atlanta education policy group suggested in a January report that some scholarship money generated through the tax credit program had been used at religious schools that ban gay, lesbian and bisexual students, including Cherokee Chrisitan School.  That group, the Southern Education …
