Canton school ranks in Newsweek's best 2,000 high schools.
Some Cherokee schools have aced Newsweek/The Daily Beast's list of best 2,000 public high schools in America. According to the list, Creekview in Canton ranks at No. 1369, while Sequoyah in Holly Springs is No. 580 out of the top 2,000 public high schools in the country. Nearby in Woodstock, Etowah High School is No. 1719, while Woodstock High is No. 1772. Newsweek’s ranking highlights high schools across the nation that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads. 134 juniors in Cherokee County earned the prestigious recognition due to their exceptionally high PSAT scores.
Cherokee County juniors who scored in the 90th percentile or above on their PSATs were recently named Superintendent’s Key Scholars by the Cherokee County School District. The program is a district-wide initiative that begins in elementary school and recognizes students who exceed the averages on standardized tests such as the ITBS. “Our Key Scholars represent the top 10% of all students in the Nation who took the PSAT exam in October, and that’s a major accomplishment for which each of them and their families should be very proud,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzielo said in a school district release. “As academic leaders, these outstanding students have the potential to continue distinguishing themselves as high school …

Although the small caliber handgun had no ammunition, authorities are taking the situation seriously.
A Creekview High School student was arrested for bringing a handgun onto school grounds Monday, according to authorities. In a letter that was sent home with Creekview students Tuesday (and is attached to this article), Principal Dr. Adrian Thomason said that the incident, "reinforces the need for school staff, students and parents to work together in reminding everyone that all types of weapons are explicitly prohibited at school under School Board Policy and Georgia law." According to Thomason's letter, authorities were unaware of the handgun being on campus until notified by a parent Monday evening. Creekview students who enter the drawing at Las Palmas in Canton might win a model rocket kit!
Creekview High School's Aeronautics Team is hosting Aeronautics Night at Las Palmas on Cumming Highway on Thursday evening. Fifteen percent of your bill will be donated to the team, and Creekview students that attend the fundraiser can enter a drawing to win a free model rocket kit. The event will last from 5 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28. If you have any more questions about the event, contact club leader Todd Sharrock at todd.sharrock@cherokee.k12.ga.us.
