Packaged alcohol sales will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Canton.
Today is the first day of Sunday alcohol sales in Canton. In November, Canton voters overwhelmingly endorsed a referendum in support of packaged alcohol sales in liquor stores, grocery stores and convenience stores on Sundays from 12:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Thursday, the Canton City Council approved an ordinance that makes it legal—a step that Ball Ground, Woodstock and Cherokee County had already taken. Canton will not charge a separate Sunday alcohol license fee for businesses. So before you settle in front of the tube for some Sunday football, stop by these establishments and stock up on some brew. A public hearing is set to discuss amending the county's alcohol ordinance to accommodate changes approved last month by voters.
Voters approved Sunday alcohol sales last month by 68 percent. Today, the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners is set to determine the details of making that a reality. It could mean that residents will be able to buy beer and wine as soon as this weekend. A public hearing is set to discuss amending the county's alcohol ordinance to accommodate the changes. There are several decisions before the board. They need to decide whether or not to raise the license fee for those who want to sell on Sunday. It could possibly be a separate fee for Sunday, said Commissioner Harry Johnston. With the county "scrambling for revenue" it's likely some increase will occur, Johnston said.
