Canton Senior Garbage Rate Won't Change

Before Thursday's vote, seniors were staring at the possibility of a $3.50 hike in their monthly garbage bills.

Breathe a sigh of relief, Canton seniors. The City Council voted Thursday night to keep your monthly garbage bills at $7.50. Before Thursday's vote, the city's senior and permanently disabled communities were staring at the possibility of a $3.50 a month hike. City staff recommended the increase because an analysis found that Canton pays $10.50 per resident for garbage service. Though the proposed hike would have still been lower than the $16.50 a month that all other customers pay, the idea of an increase didn't sit well with people like Andy Bonner, one of two seniors who spoke against the plan during the 10-minute public input period Thursday. The Canton City Council may get an earful tonight from some of the city's seniors, who are staring at the possibility of a $3.50 hike in their monthly garbage bills. While Canton's budget already includes the increase, Mayor Gene Hobgood said at the Sept. 6 council meeting that the change should be approved via a separate resolution. If that happens tonight, seniors and the disabled could see their monthly garbage bills rise from $7.50 to $11, which is still lower than the $16.50 a month that all other customers pay. This isn't the first time that the council has discussed charging seniors more for the service. I'm confused as to why City of Canton residents pay $16.50 a month for garbage service with WM when City of Woodstock residents will soon be paying $28.20 a quarter when WM takes over from Advanced Disposal? What and who determines those prices?   more ›
