The Ad Hoc Safety & Security Committee issued a slew of recommendations to enhance security at Cherokee County schools.
If funding can be secured, the Cherokee County School Board should hire more officers for its School Police Department. That's one of several recommendations issued on Thursday by the Ad Hoc Safety & Security Committee to the school board during its work session. The committee, which was formed by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzielo, have recommended: The committee made it clear that it "opposes any legislation that would empower teachers or other designated school district staff — with the exception of certified police officers — to possess or carry a firearm on a secondary school campus." The Cherokee County School Board has a packed work session agenda tonight that will cover everything from education funding, the impact of state legislation to enhanced security. The work session will start at 5:30 p.m. at the historic Canton High School/School Board auditorium. The Ad Hoc Safety and Security Committee will perform safety and security assessments of all district campuses over the next month.
The newly formed Ad Hoc Safety and Security Committee will take the next step in its task to help the district protect its students, faculty and staff. The committee will do safety and security checks of all district campuses over the next month, school district staff informed the Cherokee County School Board during Thursday's work session. After the assessments are completed, the committee will meet to review the findings and possibly issue recommendations to the district. Cherokee County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzielo announced on Friday that he's established a School Safety and Security Ad Hoc Committee. The committee, he noted, will consist of parents, principals, upper-level district staff personnel and representatives from local law enforcement agencies.
