Vigil for Jorelys Rivera to be Held Sunday

The one year anniversary of the 7-year-old's murder will be marked with "a celebration of life."

A candlelight vigil will be held on Sunday to mark the one year anniversary of the brutal murder of a seven-year-old Canton girl. Canton Elementary School student Jorelys Rivera was abducted and killed by maintenance worker Ryan Brunn in her apartment complex on Dec. 2, 2011. Brunn pleaded guilty to the murder and hanged himself in his jail cell shortly after receiving a life sentence for the crime. The vigil, however, will focus on the memory of Jorelys as a happy, loving young girl with the world at her feet. “The theme is going to be a celebration of life,” Bianca Cummings, local child safety advocate and organizer of the vigil said to The Marietta Daily Journal.  According to Cummings, Jorelys' mother Joselinne Rivera-Ruiz asked her to…

'Pursue Those Who Steal Innocence'

More than 1,700 investigators, agents and prosecutors are in Atlanta for the 2012 National Law Enforcement Training on Child Exploitation.

It's been nearly 4½ months since authorities discovered the severely beaten body of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera in a compacting Dumpster from the River Ridge at Canton apartment community where she lived and died. Apartment maintenance man Ryan Brunn assaulted, bound, gagged and—with the girl's own roller skate—bludgeoned the Canton Elementary first grader. Barely two days after he confessed to Jorelys' abduction and murder, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, he killed himself with his prison-issued sweatshirt. Today, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Deputy Attorney General James M. Cole are in Atlanta to speak to more than 1,700 investigators, agents and prosecutors at the 2012 National Law …

Smart: I Will Continue to Speak Out

Elizabeth Smart, whose 2002 abduction at the age of 14 captured worldwide attention, spoke in Canton Wednesday night.

There are several days that Elizabeth Smart will never forget. Her sixth grade graduation. Entering high school.  Her wedding. And March 12, 2003, the day that police officers found her walking the streets of Sandy, UT, with her two kidnappers, rescued her and returned her to her parents. Nine months had passed since her June 2002 abduction from her Salt Lake City bedroom at the age of 14. “I will never forget hearing the words, ‘I have a knife at your neck, don’t make a sound, get up and come with me,’ ” Smart said Wednesday night during a program at the Northside Hospital-Cherokee Conference Center. Smart, whose foundation has partnered with radKIDS, said that no child should have to go through what she did - being raped every day, and …

Jorelys Rivera's Mother Sues River Ridge

The mother of the slain 7-year-old girl claims the Canton apartment complex didn't adequately check confessed killer Ryan Brunn's background.

The mother of slain 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera is suing the apartment complex where her daughter was murdered, saying an adequate background check was not conducted on the maintenance man who committed the crime. Joselyn Rivera filed the civil lawsuit last week in Fulton County State Court. The lawsuit contends that the River Ridge at Canton apartment complex didn't conduct an adequate check of Brunn's background when he was hired and that he was kept on staff after several residents complained that he would "linger" at the complex's playground and watch the children. When reached for comment on Monday, Cady Scott Seabaugh, a spokeswoman for McCormack Baron, which manages the River Ridge complex, referred to a statement released when Brunn …

I do not think she has a strong case if she allowed her children to be outside unsupervised; the apartment complex managers are not a baby sitter. But many residents did complain about Ryan being to close to the children the managers should have addressed that.   more ›

Final Brunn Interview Released

"Yeah, she was a cute kid," he told GBI agents immediately after he confessed to the murder of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera. He also acknowledged that he'd molested others.

Monday, the GBI released new video of what would become Ryan Brunn's final interview with authorities. The footage aired on metro Atlanta television stations. In the interview, which occurred at the Cherokee County Detention Center immediately after he pleaded guilty to the December 2011 murder of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera, Brunn said he didn't pick out the Canton Elementary first-grader. "Like, I didn't have this thought in my head for two weeks," he said. "I'm not saying that," one of the GBI agents said, "but there are some children you take more notice of than others." "Yeah, she was a cute kid," said Brunn, who admitted that he was attracted to young kids and had watched child pornography. He said that he noticed Jorelys dropped her …
