GDOT is urging motorists to monitor weather conditions in advance with the possibility of light snow and icy roadways expected Thursday and Friday in areas of North Georgia.
Weather forecasts for areas of north Georgia and Canton are calling for rain and snow, and possibly black ice accumulations on roadways as far south as Columbus beginning Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. Due to the expected inclement weather, the Georgia Department of Transportation urges motorists to plan ahead before traveling during this timeframe and check weather and road conditions before heading out. “We are continuously monitoring current weather conditions and forecasts as snow flurries and high winds are predicted for north Georgia," said Keith Golden, Georgia DOT Commissioner. Two North Georgia militiamen were sentenced to five years in federal prison on charges of conspiring to obtain an unregistered explosive device and silencer. Frederick Thomas, 73, of Cleveland, and Dan Roberts, 68, of Toccoa, were sentenced today, Aug. 22, by U.S. District Judge Richard W. Story to the prison terms, to be followed by three years supervised release. They were found guilty of the charges on April 10. U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said: “These defendants didn’t just talk about killing government officials and law enforcement officers, they purchased equipment, including a silencer and what they thought were explosive devices, to carry out their plans. Northside Hospital-Cherokee is the first in North Georgia to use the wireless robot, spokeswoman Katherine Watson said today.
Before today, Northside Hospital-Cherokee had to transfer severe stroke patients to other facilities for treatment. Thanks to a new, wireless robot that allows physicians from any location to interact with patients and staff in the hospital's emergency department, more patients will be able to receive immediate care without leaving the Canton campus. "This is the only such robot north of Atlanta and just the second in Georgia," hospital spokeswoman Katherine Watson said. The attack occurred May 3 at a residence on Hightower Trail in Ball Ground.
A raccoon that recently attacked a local dog tested positive for rabies, the Cherokee County Environmental Health Department announced this afternoon. The attack occurred May 3 at a residence on Hightower Trail in Ball Ground. There was no human exposure, and since the dog was current on its rabies vaccination, only a 45-day home quarantine is required. Travel could become hazardous.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Canton and other parts of north Georgia. A mixture of freezing rain, sleet and snow is possible overnight. Travel could become hazardous, particularly across bridges and overpasses. The advisory will be in effect until 8 a.m. Friday.
