The annual breakfast, which promotes unity and tolerance among Cherokee County residents, will be held next Saturday in Canton.
Cherokee County's annual event to recognize the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will take place next weekend. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Breakfast, coordinated by Allen Temple AME Church in Woodstock, will be held 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday Jan. 19 at the Northside Hopsital-Cherokee Conference Center in Canton. The event is free and open to the public. The unity breakfast will bring together local elected officials as well as "hundreds of residents from all racial, political, social and religious backgrounds to promote unity among the citizens of the county," according to the church's press release. There are only 11 days to submit your nominee to be considered for the 2013 MLK Unity Award. The award, which will be given during the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Breakfast in January, was established in 1999 and recognizes an individual who has made a positive impact on the community by encouraging positive racial and cultural relations. The nominee must be a resident of Cherokee County or someone who has contributed to the county by engaging in positive racial and cultural relationships on a local, regional and national level. The deadline to submit nominations is Dec. 31. Submission forms can be mailed to Allen Temple AME Church at 232 Arnold Mill Road in Woodstock. Canton's Sherri Monger is the chair for the MLK Unity Breakfast this Saturday.
When she told her pastor she'd take on this year's MLK breakfast in Canton, Sherri Monger never anticipated the response she'd get. It's the 14th year for the breakfast, and several changes were made this year. It took on the county as a partner and moved from Allen Temple AME Church in Woodstock to the larger Northside Hospital-Cherokee Conference Center in Canton. And now, Monger is expecting about 500 people for breakfast on Saturday. "We didn't get turned down from any group," Monger said this week while on her lunch break. "Anybody can just show up Saturday." Monger, 39, laughs when asked how many hours she's put into the event. "Wow, oh wow. I'm always working on it."
