UPDATE: Man Fatally Shoots Self After Standoff on I-575 in Holly Springs

The standoff that started early this morning has ended with the man dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

UPDATE AT 12:03 p.m.: According to WSB, the incident started around 7:30 a.m. Sunday as the man wearing a bulletproof vest pulled over onto the side of the interstate, got out of his car and walked across two lanes to the wood line and put the gun to his head. The man remained calm and talked to negotiators for nearly an hour before taking his own life. The news outlet reports the man had a long criminal history and is not from the area. Ridgewalk interchange Could Open on Nov. 16

Officials with the Georgia Department of Transportation believe the new Ridgewalk Parkway interchange could open to traffic next Friday.

UPDATE 9:58 a.m. – the city issues the following statement on the status of the interchange: Well you may have already heard or read the good news, but I thought this update should be sent out just in case you haven’t. The Interchange contractor has provided GDOT and the City of Woodstock with a hard date of Friday, November 16, 2012 as the opening of all four of the ramps to and from I-575, and full use of the new bridge at Ridgewalk Parkway and I-575. Everyone has been very patient and cooperative during the past 21 months, and the city appreciates how well things have gone with this project despite the inconveniences it has presented residents and visitors to the area at times. Ridgewalk Interchange Could Open By Thanksgiving

Construction crew are in the final stages of the new Interstate 575 interchange between Towne Lake Parkway and Sixes Road.

The long-awaited Ridgewalk interchange could be open as early as Thanksgiving. The Georgia Department of Transporation’s project manager updated city officials on the project earlier this week and outlined the next phase of the project. “Based on our current schedule, our goal is to be completed and have the new ramps open by Thanksgiving,” Marietta-based C.W. Matthews Project Manager Tony Bradley said.   Crews are finalizing work to tie in the southern part of the new bridge over I-575. The remaining portion of concrete paving for the entrance and exit ramps are slated to be completed today. UPDATE: Big Rig Wreck on GA-140 Cleared

The tractor trailer was hauling garbage when it overturned.

Update: (3:00 p.m.): Detective Candy Worthy of the Canton Police Department says the wreck and debris has been cleared and 140 is back to full operation. There are no further updates on the condition of the driver of the tractor trailer, but authorities are hopeful they will have more infotmation soon. Update (11:20 a.m.): Canton Police Chief Robert Merchant says that the tractor trailer was traveling southbound on 140 down a hill when the driver lost control at the railroad tracks. When the truck overturned, garbage was spilled on to the highway. Merchant says the driver has been transported to a hospital, though his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. Weekend Construction on I-575

One lane will be blocked until Monday morning.

Highways across the metro Atlanta area are undergoing weekend construction projects, and Cherokee County isn't exempt from the proceedings. The right lane of Insterstate 575 is closed at Sixes Road until 5 a.m. Monday. The construction began at 7 p.m. on Friday. I-575 Toll Project Crashes to Halt

The state drops plans for a public-private partnership to ease highway congestion through Cherokee County.

If you were geared up for toll lanes along Interstates 75 and 575 in a few years, well, not so fast. The state Transportation Board pulled the plug Wednesday on the public-private partnership planned to propel the Northwest Corridor Project. The head of the state committee overseeing the $1.1 billion project, Brandon Beach, announced the decision in a two-sentence statement posted on the state Department of Transportation website. The state thus canceled a bidding process that was launched with great fanfare this fall and was supposed to end in February.
