Senate District 21 candidate Sean Jerguson is a party to a case in which he and several others have allegedly defaulted on a loan totaling more than $600,000.
Georgia Senate District 21 candidate Sean Jerguson and his business partners are on the hook to repay a bank loan totaling over $600,000. That's according to court documents filed in the U.S. District Court Northern District of Georgia. According to a lawsuit filed in September by Arkansas-based Bank of the Ozarks, J. Cary and Kimberly H. Bullard of Gainesville, owners of Sapphire Pointe LLC, Jerguson and his wife Kate have allegedly defaulted on a $611,670.95 loan and $28,956.52 in unpaid interests they received in 2004 to operate the Maplewood Mobile Home Park in Cedartown. Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Brandon Beach violated state law when he did not refund contributions raised for the 2010 primary election, according to Atlanta Unfiltered. Beach, running for the Georgia Senate at the time, raised $13,600 he planned to spend during the general election, but lost the primary. The investigative journalism website notes the state requires candidates to give back contributions raised during an election period in which they are not on the ballot. The Alpharetta resident kept those contributions and also applied them to his 2012 primary challenge against former Senator Chip Rogers, the website notes. Money is pouring into Tuesday's special election race for the Georgia Senate District 21 seat. The race, hotly contested between Holly Springs resident Sean Jerguson and North Fulton Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Brandon Beach, is the source of nearly $50,000 in contributions made in its short life span of one month. Jerguson has raised $20,158 and has spent $694.43, which leaves him with $19,463.57 cash on hand. Beach has raised $25,250 during the short period, $11,038.14 of which he reports as being carried over from the July 2012 Republican primary. That bring his total contributions to $36,813.14. Friday is the last day to vote early in the Jan. 8 special election for the Georgia House District 21 and Senate District 21 seats.
The Cherokee County Elections and Voter Registration Office in downtown Canton has seen steady traffic of voters casting their ballots ahead of Tuesday's special election. As of midday on Thursday, 730 people have voted in the election, Cherokee County Elections Supervisor Janet Munda told Patch. That's compared to more than 500 people in Milton and other north Fulton communities who have voted in the special election to fill the Georgia Senate District 21 seat. Munda said 100 people alone voted at the office on Wednesday. "It’s better than what I thought it would be," she said of the turnout so far. While the Cherokee County Elections and Voter Registration office hasn't seen much early voting traffic, local officials are still "impressed" with the turnout so far. As of Friday, 310 voters had cast ballots ahead of the Jan. 8, 2013, special election to fill both the Georgia House District 21 and Georgia Senate District 21 seats.
