House Candidate Ineligible, Withdraws From Race

Hickory Flat resident Eduardo Correia does not live in House District 21, the seat he qualified to run for in the Jan. 8, 2013 special election.

The number of candidates running for the Georgia House District 21 seat is now down to five. Eduardo Correia, who registered on Tuesday to run as an independent for the house seat being vacated by State Rep. Sean Jerguson (R-Holly Springs), has withdrawn from the race. Correia does not live in the district, which makes him ineligible to run for the seat. Cherokee County Elections Supervisor Janet Munda said it was early Wednesday morning when she noticed "he didn’t live in the district." Munda said she contacted Correia to inform him of the discrepancy and he subsequently backed out of the race.  Georgia Secretary of State Spokesman Jared Thomas said the state qualifies candidates if they fill out and sign an affidavit confirming they live…

Four candidates will be on the Jan. 8 ballot.

The qualifying period for candidates to enter the House District 21 special election on Jan. 8, 2013 ended at noon Wednesday with six people successfully qualifying. Two additional candidates qualified after the initial list was published on Dec. 10-independent international account director Eduardo Correia and Republican businessman Kenneth Ashley Mimbs. Both men are from the Canton area. Next month's election is required because the former holder of the seat, Rep. Sean Jerguson, has left the State House of Representatives in order to run for the State Senate seat vacated by Chip Rogers earlier this month. Two candidates have already dropped out of the race. The aforementioned Correia does not live in House District 21, and Bill Fincher …

House District 21 Candidates Continue Qualifying

There are four candidates on the ballot for the Jan. 8 special election.

The list of candidates for the vacant House District 21 seat is expanding, including representatives from both major political parties. The seat was vacated by Sean Jerguson on Dec. 5 so that he could run for the Senate seat of former Sen. Chip Rogers, who has retired from politics to persue a career in public broadcasting. A special election will be held on Jan. 8, 2013, to choose the next representative for House District 21, which includes Holly Springs and parts of Canton and Woodstock. Below is the list of candidates that have qualified to run for the upcoming election. If a candidate's name is highlighted, he or she has been profiled by Patch and you can read more about them by clicking on their name.

Sean Jerguson as he plans to run for the Georgia Senate District 21 seat. Bergeron, 41, is a partner at Bass, Bergeron & Smith, PC. Political Consultant Joins State House Race

Hickory Flat resident Brian Laurens will run for the State House District 21 seat.

The race to fill the Georgia House District 21 seat now has a second contender. Brian Laurens, a Hickory Flat resident, has declared his candidacy to run for the seat, which has been vacated by State Rep. Sean Jerguson (R-Holly Springs). Jerguson has decided to seek the Georgia Senate District 21 seat, which also became vacant earlier this week with the resignation of former Senator Chip Rogers. Laurens, who has an extensive background with the Georgia Republican Party for the better part of a decade, said he decided to run because "now is the time" for "true conservatives" to occupy every level of government.   "Our nation and our state face serious challenges that are best met with the ideals of our founders, free people, free markets …
