Video: Voters Have Their Say

TSPLOST and the chance to help shape the Cherokee County Board of Education compelled these residents to vote in today's general primary.

A controversial transportation referendum and a number of competitive local races drove early voters to the polls in high numbers. And based on interivews with some residents, that's what drove voters to precincts across Cherokee today for the general primary. Defeating TSPLOST brought 77-year-old Harrison Williams to the polls at Grace Church in Canton. "That's a tax that I will have to pay and never see," he said. "If anybody 65 and over is voting for it, they might never see it." Over at Canton's Sixes Elementary, 50-year-old Renea McGill voted against the controversial transportation sales tax. "We've just been taxed enough," said McGill, who voted with her 21-year-old daughter. "I don't think that's necessary." Watch what Williams, …

As usual, you're incorrect. CCA's budget has been online for almost a month now and their per-child spending is half that of the bloated CCSD. Not a dime of CCSD money is used for CCA. Your hatred is based on pure ignorance. Vote for Dukes, Marlow, & Cochran - STOP THE WASTEFUL SPENDING and GIVE PARENTS CONTROL.   more ›

Byron Dobbs asked Danny Dukes if he would be able to work with Dr. Petruzielo. He started the question by saying Mr. Dukes was heavily involved in Cherokee Charter Academy. Furthermore, this is not an article. It is a video clip with a short intro to provide context for readers who might not have understood why Mr. Dobbs made the connection to Cherokee Charter in his question.   more ›

Ya know what.... Nice promises - but . Dukes is a repulican or Libertarian (which is actually also repulican 'like').... - the republicans are just NOT trusted by the '98%', because they don't do anything good 'for them'..... Their protected or preferred people are the wealthy, and corporations.... If I'm wrong and this man IS a Democrat than he might be serious about his promises to help get rid…   more ›

Dukes Enters Campaign for BOE Chair

He said he will eliminate all teacher furloughs, cut the county dropout rate and never vote for a tax increase.

Pledging to eliminate all teacher furloughs by reducing a "bloated" central office, Cherokee Charter Academy governing board member Danny Dukes said late Tuesday night that he will run for county school board chair. “We all deserve a school board with positive, collaborative energy and an effective leader who works for solutions based on conservative principles,” he said in a statement. “We can have the highest performing school system in Georgia if we put students first and pledge to work with other elected leaders to solve problems. And we can do all this without raising taxes.” Dukes' decision came a little more than a month after he announced the formation of an exploratory committee to weigh the pros and cons of a campaign for the …

@Mikael...Listening is probably fearful of people like you. As I recall, in previous thread you attempted to find out information about Ashley or another person such as what school and grade her child was in. That put everyone on notice that there are nuts on here and that their personal safety could be in jeopardy. It may be against the rules of Patch.com, but I'd support the use of alias'.   more ›

More BOE Prospects Emerge

Monday, Danny Dukes announced the formation of an exploratory team to consider the pros and cons of a campaign for school board chair.

Cherokee Charter Academy governing board member Danny Dukes isn't the only person considering a run for school board chair. Now that Gov. Nathan Deal has signed Cherokee's controversial school redistricting bill, three others have expressed an interest in the seat, according to a report in today's Cherokee Tribune. Cherokee Board of Education Chairman Mike Chapman, Vice Chairwoman Janet Read and former school board member Eddie Blackwell told the Tribune that they are also mulling BOE runs. Under House Bill 978, six school board members will be elected by district and the chair will be elected countywide. Currently, all seven school board members are elected countywide and the board selects a chair and vice chair at its first meeting of …

Days after a controversial redistricting bill was sent to Gov. Nathan Deal for his signature, a member of Cherokee Charter Academy's governing board is mulling a possible run for Cherokee school board chairman. @Stacey...I support the traditional CCSD and I agree that things can improve. It matters not what type of organization you're discussing, there are always opportunities for improvement.
