Region 7-AAAA champs end season 23-7.
The tears on the Creekview bench said it all: the Lady Grizzlies season was over. The Region 7-AAAA champions bid for a state quarterfinal berth was halted in the Sweet 16 Tuesday when Miller Grove outlasted the Lady Grizzlies in overtime 57-52. Lady Grizzlies head coach Roger Nolan tried to console his team after the game, "I told the girls that unless you win the state championship, the season ends up like this [with a loss]." Creekview's trademark in 23 wins this season had been its suffocating defense and the defense came out and did its job. The Lady Grizzlies held Miller Grove to only 15 first-half points, however, the Creekview offense also struggled and the Lady Grizzlies trailed at the break 15-13. Creekview looked to be in …

Lady Grizzlies earn Sweet 16 matchup with Miller Grove.
If defense wins championships, then the GHSA might want to give the state championship trophy to Creekview right now. The Lady Grizzly stingy defense forced 29 turnovers Friday as Creekview cruised to a 59-25 win over No. 4 seed Sprayberry in the first round of the AAAA state playoffs. The victory represented the first tournament win in school history for the Creekview girls. For Creekview coach Roger Nolan, the game plan was simple: stop Sprayberry star Nadia Ogene. "Stopping Nadia Ogene was the key," Nolan said after the game. "I knew if Madison Rice was able to put ball pressure on [Ogene] without getting into foul trouble, we would be all right." Rice's defense was impenetrable most of the night. The junior recorded eight steals and …

Chiefs headed for region championship; Creekview moves onto consolation game.
In a rivalry game, nothing is surprising. Not a 20-minute delay so volunteers can clean chalk dust up off the floor. Not a jam packed gymnasium and certainly not a seven point fourth-quarter comeback. All of those happened Friday at Creekview High School. With almost 3,000 people packed into the gym, Sequoyah saved their undefeated season by overcoming a 40-33 fourth quarter deficit to top Creekview 53-49. Chief star Sean Tate scored 31 points in the game, including a 10-of-12 fourth-quarter performance from the free-throw line. The game was delayed 20 minutes after Creekview's LeBron James 'chalk dust' entrance clouded the entire gym and most of the court with chalk dust. However, once, the game got going, the action never stopped. The …

For the first time in its school's history, Creekview will play in the AAAA state basketball tournament.
The Creekview Grizzlies jumped out to an early first-half lead over the Woodland Wildcats in Wednesday’s quarterfinal-round game of the Region 7-AAAA basketball tournament, but still had to scramble, eventually holding off the Wildcats 62-56. An eight-point lead grew into a potential rout as the Grizzlies entered halftime up by 14 points. But as head coach Casey Gramling knew all too well, no lead in this region is safe for his team. “We're good at making games interesting,” said Gramling. “We've played 14 games this year that have been three points or less. I knew they were going to make a run and I'm just thrilled to death that the boys stood up and stopped their run and came out with a victory.’ Woodland started the third quarter making…

Creekview won by 14 points on Tuesday, but it fought very hard to earn it's 7-AAAA tournament win.
When Creekview missed open layups on its first two trips down the court to start its quarterfinal-round game of the Region 7-AAAA tournament against Rome, the offense could have shut down from frustration. That’s not what happened as the Lady Grizzlies grabbed the lead late in the first quarter and ran away with the game, winning 48-34. “Oh yeah they did,” said Creekview head coach Roger Nolan when asked if Rome played them tougher than the scoreboard showed. “It was a very tough win. They are very fast and athletic and a physical team, and they showed up tonight. I watched them play Woodland on Saturday and they didn't play very well. This was different and we had to earn every point.” Creekview took the lead on a buzzer beater by Jayde …

Creekview had a first-round bye, but plays on Tuesday against Rome.
The Region 7-AAAA Basketball Tournament will continue play on Tuesday at Creekview High School after early-round action on Saturday pushed three teams through to the quarterfinal round. Sequoyah (12-13, 9-5), the No. 5 seed, will face Northwest Whitfield (18-7, 10-4), the No. 4 seed, at 4 p.m. The Lady Chiefs beat Northwest Whitfield by three points on Jan. 7, but lost on Jan. 28 by six points. The winner will move onto the semifinal round to face the eventual winner of the Chattahoochee – South Forsyth game at 8:30 p.m. At 5:30 p.m. Creekview (19-6, 11-4), the No. 3 seed, will face Rome (18-8, 10-5), the No. 6 seed. Both the boys and girls needed wins against Chatahoochee on Friday, but came away empty-handed.
Starting a basketball game and watching your opponents go on an 11-0 run is tough to the stomach. Add in the fact that you also get held without a point in the entire first quarter and that can be impossible to recover from. That’s exactly how it happened to Creekview on Friday at Chattahoochee High School. The Cougars jumped out in the first quarter and kept scoring and scoring. All the while Creekview shots just kept bouncing off the rim as if there were a lid attached. “We have a habit of that sometimes,” said Grizzlies head coach Roger Nolan, speaking about shooting woes early in games this season. Instead of rolling over and just going through the motions like a team with nothing to play for, Creekview fought, and they fought with …
