Former Police Spokeswoman Will Sue Canton

Sgt. Stacy Bailey is suing the City of Canton for alleged violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

The former Canton Police spokeswoman who was embroiled in controversies stemming from an affair with the former Sandy Springs Police Chief will soon file suit against the city. Sgt. Stacy Bailey allegedly diverted funds from the Canton Police Department's Explorers fund to buy a $5,000 golf cart for the disabled son of the former Sandy Springs Police Chief Scott Jamison. Bailey also drew interest from the GBI due to her alleged misappropriation of funds. On Oct. 9, the City of Canton was served notice that a lawsuit is impending from Bailey, alleging violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Bailey was suspended from her post with pay in July. Bailey was responsible for the implementation of a new safety program for children that came in…

Report: Canton Police Department Explorers Money Allegedly Used to Purchase Golf Cart

Canton Police Sgt. Stacy Bailey is under investigation for misuse of funds from the department's Explorers program for teens.

Canton Police Chief Bob Merchant accused the department's spokeswoman of carrying on a sexual relationship with a recently retired Sandy Springs Police captain and using funds from the agency's Explorers program to purchase a $6,000 customized golf cart for the man's disabled son in an internal memo obtained by Fox 5 Atlanta. Canton Police Sgt. Stacy Bailey is the subject of a GBI criminal investigation, officials with both agencies told Canton-Sixes Patch on Wednesday. So is Sandy Springs Police Capt. Scott Jamison, according to the Fox 5 Atlanta news report. Jamison took a voluntary retirement on July 16, Sandy Springs public information officer Steve Rose told Sandy Springs Patch. Two days later, Merchant asked the GBI to "look into an …

GBI: Canton Police Spokeswoman Subject of Investigation

The agency is looking into a "specific expense from the Explorers account," an official with the GBI said.

Sgt. Stacy Bailey, the spokeswoman for the Canton Police Department and one of the key figures behind a new child safety program, is the subject of a GBI criminal investigation, officials with both agencies said today. Chief Bob Merchant on July 18 asked the GBI to "look into an expense from the ... Explorers fund," said Kim Williams, a special agent in the GBI's Cleveland, GA, office, which covers Cherokee County. The Explorers program exposes teenagers to careers in law enforcement. Merchant said "information that was supplied to me from an individual that was involved in this particular matter" prompted him to request the GBI investigation. "The information was turned over to them," he said. Williams said her office has contacted the …

Canton's Assistant Police Chief Fired

"It is my understanding that the City Manager had no input or role in deciding to terminate Mr. Vande Zande, and therefore the purported basis for any legal claim would not be true," the city attorney said.

Todd Vande Zande, who temporarily took the helm of the Canton Police Department after the agency faced widespread criticism for its role in the search of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera, was fired today. "I have confirmed that Todd Vande Zande’s employment was terminated today," city attorney Bobby Dyer wrote in an email to Canton-Sixes Patch. Vande Zande had until the close of business today to resign or face termination, Atlanta lawyer Lance J. LoRusso said in a letter to the mayor, the city manager, the new police chief and all six members of the Canton City Council. Dyer said he has received a copy of the letter and refuted LoRusso's claim that Vande Zande's ouster was retaliation for his failure to comply with several requests from City …

Attorney: Vande Zande, Canton's Interim Police Chief, Given Ultimatum

Todd Vande Zande, who was charged with stabilizing the Canton Police Department after the Jorelys Rivera case, must resign today or be fired, his lawyer said.

The man tasked with stabilizing the Canton Police Department after the brutal abduction and murder of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera must resign today or be fired, his attorney said. New police Chief Bob Merchant on Friday "advised (assistant police chief Todd) Vande Zande that his employment would be terminated on Monday if Vande Zande did not voluntarily resign his position by close of business on Monday," Atlanta lawyer Lance J. LoRusso wrote in a letter to Merchant, the mayor, the city manager and all six members of the Canton City Council. In the letter, LoRusso introduced himself as Vande Zande's attorney, demanded "the City of Canton immediately cease its harassment and retaliatory actions," asked that Merchant and the city manager take …
