Cherokee Man Treated For Rabies Exposure

The man is being treated after he was bitten by a stray cat earlier this month.

  A Cherokee County man is being treated for rabies exposure after he was attacked by a stray cat, officials with the North Georgia Health District said Thursday evening. According to a press release, the man was attacked on Dec. 1 after responding to sounds of cats fighting outside his home near the intersection of Highway 140/Hickory Flat Highway and Creek Hollow Drive in southeast Cherokee County. A gray and white cat he fed often was outside his home and started rubbing against the man's legs. The cat suddenly became aggressive and bit him. Officials Confirm Seventh Rabies Case

On August 10, two dogs attacked and killed a raccoon on Sardis Circle in Canton. The raccoon tested positive for rabies.

Another raccoon in Cherokee County has tested positive for rabies, North Georgia Health District spokeswoman Jennifer King said today. "This makes a total of seven confirmed cases of rabies for the county this year, including four other raccoons, a dog and a fox," she said. The latest case involves two dogs who attacked and killed a raccoon on Sardis Circle in Canton on Aug. 10. Cherokee County Environmental Health specialist Glendon Gordy said the head of the raccoon was sent to the Georgia State Laboratory for testing. Rabid Fox Attacks Jogger, Pet

It's the fourth case this summer.

For the fourth time since May, a Cherokee County animal has tested positive for rabies. According to Cherokee County Environmental Health specialist Glendon Gordy, a rabid fox attacked a dog, then chased a jogger at a Woodstock residence on Hickory Fairway Drive on July 14. "The jogger kicked the fox away and it ran under the deck of a nearby home where it remained until local law enforcement arrived and shot it," North Georgia Health District spokeswoman Jennifer King said in an email to Canton-Sixes Patch.
