Cherokee To Vote On Hobgood Park Improvements

The Cherokee County Commission will consider awarding a construction contract to perform improvements to Hobgood Park.

Hobgood Park will soon see its second phase of improvements.  The Cherokee County Commission will consider awarding a contract to Georgia Development Partners for $1.3 million during its meeting tonight. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the county administration building in Canton. The meeting will follow the commissioners' work session at 3 p.m. Phase two of the project includes the project includes new signage, sports lighting, modifying existing parking areas and applying new striping, resurfacing the tennis court and renovating the existing concession and restroom building.  The commission will also consider a resolution to reduce the commission fee charged to the Cherokee County Board of Education to collect its taxes and an agreement …

Cherokee Delays New Lathemtown Library

The library was slated to be built in eastern Cherokee County and cost around $5.6 million to build.

A proposal to build a new library in eastern Cherokee County has been postponed. Cherokee County Commissioners on Tuesday voted 4-1 to postpone moving forward to construct a new library on the corner of Highway 20 and Old Mill Road in the Lathemtown community. Commissioner Harry Johnston voted against postponing the library.  The board also will reach out to the Cherokee County legislative delegation to see if the library system can be the first to receive the next round of state funding. The project was slated to cost about $5.3 million to build and will be about 18,000 square feet. Cherokee To Discuss Roosters Not Raised For Food as Potential "Nuisances"

Cherokee Commissioners will weigh amending its ordinance to include the animals not used for food as potential nuisances.

The Cherokee County Commission will meet today and discuss whether the use of roosters for non-sustenance purposes could be considered a nuisance. The board will meet for its work session today at 3 p.m.and its meeting at 6 p.m. at the Cherokee County administrative offices in Canton. County Commissioner Harry Johnston will lead the discussion and will ask County Attorney Angela Davis to draft a revision to its ordinance that would include roosters not housed with hens and/or not used primarily in food production as potential nuisances. Johnston noted he sometimes gets complaints from northern Cherokee residents about farms that allegedly raise fighting roosters. Cherokee Gives More Money To Complete Ball Ground Recycling Audit

The Board of Commissioners gave an additional $169,000 to McClendon & Associates to complete its forensic audit on the failed venture.

An already cash-strapped Cherokee County had to cough up an additional $169,000 to allow a Newnan-based accounting firm to complete its forensic audit of the failed Ball Ground Recycling venture. The county Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved modifying its agreement with McClendon & Associates to change the not-to-exceed cap to $269,000 for the firm to complete its work. The board also approved an additional request for lead accountant Rhonda McClendon to retain Newnan attorney George Rosenzweig to ensure she's on the right track in her investigation. Cherokee Office of Economic Development Gets Boost From Cities, County

The Cherokee County Commission on Tuesday voted to provide up to $60,000 for three years to the Cherokee Office of Economic Development.

A request from Cherokee County Chairman Buzz Ahrens to shore up the county's economic development efforts has garnered formal approval. The Cherokee County Commission on Tuesday voted to approve matching up to $60,000 each year for the next three years, which would be funneled into the annual operating budget of the Cherokee Office of Economic Development. The county will match the collective amount each of the five cities will contribute towards CoED's budget.  Ahrens said the $120,000 is "enough to make a difference." Ahrens in January formally emailed the cities Woodstock, Canton, Holly Springs, Ball Ground and Waleska and asked them to each consider contributing money towards CoED's budget. Cherokee Commission Chair Buzz Ahrens Wants More Funds for Economic Development

The Cherokee County Commission Chair will discuss steering more funding to the Office of Economic Development today during the Board of Commissioners' meeting today.

Discussing ways to shore up the Cherokee Office of Economic Development's budget will be discussed by the Cherokee County Commission during its work session and meeting this afternoon. The work session will start at 3 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Both will be held on the lower level of the county administration building. Ahrens in January formally emailed the cities Woodstock, Canton, Holly Springs, Ball Ground, Waleska, Nelson and Mountain Park and asked them to each consider contributing money towards CoED's budget. Commissioner Harry Johnston Will Host Town Hall On Monday

Cherokee County District 1 Commissioner Harry Johnston will discuss various topics with residents Monday at 7 p.m. in Canton.

Cherokee County District 1 Commissioner Harry Johnston will give residents an opportunity to meet with him to discuss various issues. Johnston will hold a town hall from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday April 1 at the county administration building in Canton.  Monday's meeting is the second in a series of town hall meetings by Johnston. Topics of discussion could include, but are not limited to: parks construction program, the Resource Recovery Development Authority recycling facility, county budget and taxation, and the potential for fire services merger between the city of Canton and Cherokee County.

Cherokee Gets 399 Acres for Parks Use

The County Commission has tentatively accepted a donation of 399 acres from the Scott Hudgens Foundation, which it use for parks and recreation space.

Cherokee County's greenspace will soon grow by nearly 400 acres. The Scott Hudgens Foundation has chosen to donate 399 acres of land along Highway 140 near the Cherokee County/Bartow County line to the county government.  The County Commission unanimously voted to accept the donation pending the county receives the proper documents and completes the title search.  The land sits adjacent to the county's Garland Mountain Horse and Hike Trails in the northwest corner of the county and has frontage along the state route. The county plans to use the land for active and/or passive parks and recreation.  Scott Hudgens, the late World War II veteran, is the same person who donated the land that's now houses the 775-acre Georgia National Cemetery …

Cherokee Still In The Market For Recycling Facility Operator

Cherokee County Commissioners held a joint meeting with the Resource Recovery Development Authority to hear an update on the failed Ball Ground Recycling venture.

After a little more than a year of assuming financial responsibility of the failed Ball Ground Recycling venture, Cherokee County still has no solid commitment from any prospective companies to to take over operations.  Cherokee County Commissioners held a joint meeting with the Resource Recovery Development Authority to update each other and the public on the county's efforts to secure a deal for a company to take over a majority of the debt taxpayers are on the hook for.  Commissioner Harry Johnston said the county doesn't "have an offer on the table we are weighting at this moment," but it has to be steadfast in keeping the facility and its equipment in top shape.
