Cherokee Leaders "Very Pleased" With Property Value Jump

After years of managing declining property tax revenue, the upswing is welcome news for Cherokee leaders.

The news of an increase in Cherokee County property tax values is not falling on deaf ears among local leaders. The county learned last week that its gross tax digest grew to nearly $7.4 billion in 2013, up from $7.2 billion in 2012. Cherokee County Chief Appraiser John Adams said after exemptions, the total net taxable digest is up by 3 percent for the county and up 2.8 percent for the school portion of property taxes. County Commission Chair Buzz Ahrens said he was "very pleased" with the initial results overall. The county was hoping to see either a 1 or 2 percent increase in property values, "so the out-of-the box 3 percent is a great message and starting point." Cherokee Aquatic Center Ribbon Cutting on Thursday

Officials will hold a ribbon cutting for the facility at 10 a.m. and a grand opening on Saturday.

Cherokee County leaders and stakeholders will be on hand to celebrate the opening of the much anticipated Cherokee County Aquatic Center. The ribbon cutting will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the facility on Gresham Mill Parkway in Holly Springs. The grand opening and open house is slated for 10 am. to 8 p.m. Saturday.  Hours of operation and admission prices have been posted on the Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency's website. Residents can still register for swim lessons as well as for their children to participate in the aquatic center's first swim season.  The center will consist of 48,000 indoor facility, and an 18,000 square foot outdoor leisure pool and deck area. Cherokee Delays New Lathemtown Library

The library was slated to be built in eastern Cherokee County and cost around $5.6 million to build.

A proposal to build a new library in eastern Cherokee County has been postponed. Cherokee County Commissioners on Tuesday voted 4-1 to postpone moving forward to construct a new library on the corner of Highway 20 and Old Mill Road in the Lathemtown community. Commissioner Harry Johnston voted against postponing the library.  The board also will reach out to the Cherokee County legislative delegation to see if the library system can be the first to receive the next round of state funding. The project was slated to cost about $5.3 million to build and will be about 18,000 square feet. Cherokee County has to give $3.6 million for construction costs and find another $300,000 to fund operations on an annual basis. Susan White, the director of …

Cherokee County's largest arts and crafts festival is seeking vendors and concessionaires.  The 29th annual Riverfest Arts and Crafts Festival, sponsored by the Service League of Cherokee County, is accepting applications from fine arts and crafts exhibitors, marketplace vendors and concessionaires.   Riverfest will take place 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday Sept. 28 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday Sept. 29 at Boling Park next to Cherokee High School in Canton.  The league will once again offer its Riverfest Referral Program, and will improve the Exhibitor Awards Program.  The Riverfest Referral Program offers arts and crafts exhibitors a chance to reduce their booth space fees by referring new participants to the show.  The Exhibitor Awards …

Cherokee To Discuss Roosters Not Raised For Food as Potential "Nuisances"

Cherokee Commissioners will weigh amending its ordinance to include the animals not used for food as potential nuisances.

The Cherokee County Commission will meet today and discuss whether the use of roosters for non-sustenance purposes could be considered a nuisance. The board will meet for its work session today at 3 p.m.and its meeting at 6 p.m. at the Cherokee County administrative offices in Canton. County Commissioner Harry Johnston will lead the discussion and will ask County Attorney Angela Davis to draft a revision to its ordinance that would include roosters not housed with hens and/or not used primarily in food production as potential nuisances. Johnston noted he sometimes gets complaints from northern Cherokee residents about farms that allegedly raise fighting roosters. Former Atlanta Braves Center Fielder Otis Nixon Arrested in Cherokee

Nixon, 54, has been charged with felony possession of cocaine after he was arrested along I-575 near the Airport Road interchange.

Former Atlanta Brave Otis Nixon is in trouble with the law. The former center-fielder for the Braves was arrested just after midnight on Saturday for felony possession of cocaine and possession of a drug-related object, according to a police report from the Cherokee Sheriff's Office.  He remains at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center with a $11,880 bond. Nixon, who had a 66-year-old female passenger in the truck with him, was pulled over after Cherokee County dispatchers put out a be-on-the-lookout for a possible intoxicated driver traveling in a red Dodge Ram truck northbound on Interstate 575. Rain Moves Out Tuesday, Warmer Temps Moving In

After 20 percent chance of showers Tuesday, mostly sunny skies on tap in Canton.

After a weekend filled with flood warnings, the cancellation of Cherokee's Touch-A-Truck and the closure of Olde Rope Mill Park in Woodstock, Canton and Cherokee County will start to see some relief from the rain on Tuesday, with mostly sunny skies predicted to move in on Wednesday. According to the National Weather Service's Canton forecast, showers are likely to continue Monday, with a high near 60. New rainfall amounts will total a 10th to 1/4th inch, with amounts higher in thunderstorms.
