For the second year in a row, Cherokee will not qualify for the state basketball tournament.
Woodstock girls head coach Julie Crowe has been a part of the school’s basketball program for 13 of its 14 years in existence. Crowe is in her seventh season as the Woodstock head coach. Before that she spent six seasons as an assistant. But not once has she been a part of a state tournament game. That streak will now become a thing of the past as Woodstock beat Cherokee 58-44 in the first round of the Region 5-AAAAA tournament to earn its first-ever state tournament berth. “There’s a quote that I saw that I’ve been using the past couple of days,” Crowe said. “‘In order to get where you’ve never been, you’ve got to do what you’ve never done.’ It’s just one of those things where (our players) bought in. It’s a big time for them.” Brianna …

Girls get a tough win while the boys can't keep up with Trojans
The Cherokee Lady Warriors only scored 12 points in the first quarter against Lassiter. So one would think they came away with a loss, right? That was not the case, because they were able to get back on track the next three quarters to come away with a 49-35 win over the Lady Trojans. Any coach will say a win is a win, but head coach Matt Cates knows his team has a lot to work to do in order to end the season strong. “We’ve got to be smarter defensively,” Cates said. “That’s something that has been an Achilles heel for us.” Cates also notes that the team has to take advantages of opportunities that are given to them. “We missed 17 free throws tonight,” Cates added. “That’s the difference and chance of 17 points. We have got to be a better …

The boys lost a close one in the final minute, while the girls fell behind after an early five-point lead.
The final sequence of Cherokee’s 44-41 loss to Etowah Friday had the Warriors pining for the clutch shooting of one of the NBA’s renowned sharpshooters. “Somebody brought up Ray Allen. I told them Ray Allen comes to the gym four hours before game time to shoot jump shots. That’s why he hits those kind of shots,” said Cherokee head coach Roger Kvam. The shots that Kvam is referring to were the two wide-open looks from beyond the 3-point line that his team got in the game’s final minute, either of which would have wiped out a 43-41 deficit and potentially won the game for the Warriors. “We had two wide open threes from guys who can make shots,” he said. “We had our opportunities, so it’s disappointing that we didn’t knock them down.” Lance …

Teams: Creekview vs. Lambert Time: 6 p.m. Where: Creekview High School Preview: A loss on Dec. 29 to Northview halted a nine-game winning streak by the Creekview Lady Grizzlies (12-2, 4-0), who are still unbeaten in 7-AAAA Region play. Lambert (7-3, 2-0) will bring a fight on Friday as they are unbeaten in region play, as well, and working on a six-game winning streak. Teams: Cherokee vs. Wheeler Time: 6 p.m. Where: Wheeler High School Preview: The Cherokee Lady Warriors (6-7, 1-2) broke out of a four-game losing streak on Tuesday when they beat Lassiter, but head coach Matt Cates still doesn’t think his team is playing smart basketball. Cherokee looks to pull even in 5-AAAAA Region play and move to 2-2 at Wheeler (5-6, 0-2) on Friday.

With one minute to play, Cherokee let Lassiter handle the ball for 58 seconds prior to hitting a game-winning shot with two seconds to play.
With the score tied at 56 with one minute to play, the Cherokee Warriors couldn't get the ball away from the Lassiter Trojans, and fell victim to a game-winning shot with two seconds to play, giving Lassiter a 58-56 win on Tuesday at Cherokee High School. The Warriors watched Lassiter score 13 quick points to start the game, but answered when Dionte Jenkins took control of the paint and scored 11 points in the opening quarter. "We felt that we got off to a bad start," said Cherokee head coach Roger Kvam. "Early in that first quarter they made three-straight threes and two driving baskets. They had 13 points right off the bat. Then we felt that both teams kind of settled into the game and it became the kind of game that we thought it was …
A 55-32 win over Lassiter should be enough to earn praise. But sloppy play and lack of effort marred the win, according to Coach Cates.
The Cherokee Lady Warriors beat Lassiter Tuesday, 55-32, on the team's home court at Cherokee High School. But you wouldn't be able to tell by the way head coach Matt Cates shouted throughout the game. "Lazy," said Cates about the play of his team. "They weren't playing very hard. They weren't playing team defense." The Lady Warriors started strong with Aunisha Williams scoring six points in the first quarter, all while dominating the paint. But some free-throw troubles and poor shooting on the interior forced Cherokee to switch to the outside shot. Three different players recorded three-point buckets in the second quarter, but it was Lauren Mullinax that kept her hot hand going throughout the game. Mullinax scored 14 points, hitting four …
