See the Ribbon Cutting at Canton Theatre

The historic theatre unveiled its newest movie projection equipment on Thursday.

The Canton Theatre showed its first motion picture in nearly 40 years with the Thursday airing of "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark." The ceremonial ribbon cutting for the new equipment was held on Thursday on the stage of the historic theatre. The stage was crowded with dignitaries from the City of Canton, the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce, and other arts and governmental bodies. Theatre Manager Bob Seguin, who called the building his "man cave," has been credited with spearheading the drive to get $51,000 in new equipment to modernize the theatre and open it up for more corporate and family-friendly events. The Canton Theatre is currently seeking sponsors for a Saturday movie series which would allow free admission for …

Canton Theatre's Projection Equipment Debuts Thursday

"Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" is the inaugural movie to be shown at the Canton Theatre.

A new era for the Canton Theatre will begin on Thursday evening when a movie is shown on the premises for the first time in decades. The theatre showed movies regularly from 1940 until the 1970s, when the property fell into disrepair. It was bought in 1994 and deeded to the City of Canton in 1997 in order for renovation work to be carried out. Since the theatre re-opened, it has shown plays, musicals, and other stage productions, but had not returned to its roots as a movie theatre. Last year, the Canton City Council approved a $51,000 purchase of projection equipment for the theatre to allow it to show movies again. The high definition, Blu Ray capable projection equipment includes a screen that is 25 feet wide and 12 feet tall.  The $51,…

Who is the clown on the far right in the tan blazer?? It's okay to have different opinions, but to bulldog the mayor and waste everyone's time is VERY disrespectful and so arrogant. I wasted about 2 hours of my life watching this. Unbelievable.... No wonder Gov Barnes left early shaking his head..... I applaud the constituents and Council members that have dealt with this clown for so long. They …   more ›

City Council Will Take Action on Theatre Renovation Tonight

The proposal to allow the Canton Theatre to show motion pictures is one of the items on the agenda for tonight.

The Canton City Council will decide the fate of a $51,000 amendment to the city budget that would allow for a renovation to the Canton Theatre during their meeting Thursday evening. The renovation, presented by the Canton Downtown Development Authority's Theater Equipment Committee, would allow the theatre to play motion pictures when it is not being used for stage productions. The committee estimates it could make a profit of $143 per movie showing, but stresses the real revenues come from corporate sponsorships of movie festivals and companies using the facility and its modern equipment for seminars and other functions. If approved, the renovation would give the theatre at least a 220-inch screen, a 6000 lumen projector, an HDTV receiver…
