The former Canton Police Department sergeant who was fired after an internal investigation into her alleged inappropriate purchase of a golf cart with Young Explorers funds has reached a tentative settlement with the city after filing suit against the city last year. Stacy Bailey, who appealed her termination on the grounds that the internal investigation completed by the Marietta Police Department was biased against her and sued the City of Canton claiming that she was denied overtime pay and merit pay, will receive $60,000 from the city under the terms of the proposed settlement. Jon Bettis will be laid to rest on Sunday at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery in Canton.
The teenager who drowned earlier this week while swimming in the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir will be laid to rest on Sunday. Funeral services for Jon Thomas Bettis, 17, will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the South Canton Funeral Home Chapel. Bettis will be buried at Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery following the services. The family will continue to receive friends and condolences today between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. at South Canton. Bettis drowned on Wednesday while swimming in the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir in Canton, which opened to the public in March. The 17-year-old who drowned in the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir Wednesday afternoon has been identified by authorities. According to the Canton Police Department, Jon Thomas Bettis of Canton drowned some time between 1:45 and 5 p.m. Thursday, after entering the reservoir from a bank that he and his friend were fishing from. According to the police, Bettis' friend jumped in the water to try to save him, but had to swim the 30 feet back to shore to inform authorities. UPDATE (7:05 p.m.): According to the Canton Police Department, the body of the 17-year-old was located by Cherokee County divers and recovered at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday. Owing to the wishes of the family, the young man's name is not being released. A Cherokee Fire and EMS release says that the drowning victim and a friend were fishing in the reservoir when he decided to jump into the water for a swim. A few minutes later, the 17-year-old went under and did not resurface. The Cherokee EMS Dive Team was told that the young man went missing in an area that was about 30 feet from the bank. An Acworth man was arrested by the Canton Police Department after an officer discovered more than three ounces of suspected methamphetamine.
The Canton Police Department has arrested an Acworth man on trafficking charges after discovering $7,000 worth of suspected methamphetamine and over $4,000 of suspected drug money in his vehicle. On March 29, Canton Police Officer Campbell stopped a vehicle on Interstate 575 after noticing the vehicle was not maintaining its lane and the driver was not wearing his seat belt. Upon being pulled over, the driver allegedly gave a false name and produced a fake ID. Authorities say that the man then attempted to flee from Campbell and Corporal Adam Smith. The officers caught the man and he was subsequently identified as Randall Gene Smith, 52, of Acworth. The officers soon discovered why Smith was so evasive. Further investigation turned up 3.16…

A Canton man has been arrested for allegedly shooting his brother-in-law in the chest Wednesday afternoon.
The Canton Police Department has made an arrest in the shooting of a man during a family dispute on Lakeview Drive Wednesday morning, according to the department. According to a department press release, Heriberto Munoz-Juarez, 32, was arrested Thursday by detectives on suspicion of shooting his brother-in-law, Hector Hernandez, 30. Hernandez suffered a gunshot wound to the upper chest and underwent surgery at WellStar Kennestone Hospital. According to the department, Hernandez is currently in stable condition.

A man is in serious condition at Northside Hospital-Cherokee after he was shot in the course of a family dispute, authorities say.
