Councilmen Push for Referendum Approval

Two city councilmen asked the mayor to publicly support the passage of the March 19 fire bond referendum.

With the referendum to approve a $6 million bond to pay for the construction of three new fire stations in the Canton area less than a month away, some Canton city councilmen attempted to get mayoral support for a yes vote during Thursday's regular meeting. Councilmen Hooky Huffman and John Beresford were vocal in their support of the passage of the bond referendum, and asked Mayor Gene Hobgood to use his "clout" to convince citizens that voting for the bond was a good idea. The $6 million bond will pay for the construction of fire stations at the Canton Marketplace, at the Bluffs Parkway, and at Laurel Canyon. The new fire stations, once operational, would reduce the city's ISO rating, lowering insurance rates for citizens. "This is the …

On the Fire Bond Referendum your article is misleading in that you state "millage rates will be increased to three mills to help pay for their operational costs." In actuality they will be increased by three mills and when you include the bond service the total millage rate will be about 6.7 mills. To put this in proper perspective Cherokee County levies currently 3.394 mills.   more ›

City Council Will Discuss Committee on Canton's Future

The discussion is one of many planned for the meeting at City Hall tonight.

The Canton City Council will begin its discussion of Mayor Gene Hobgood's proposed "Committee on Canton's Future" during its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday evening. The committee, first described by Hobgood during his state of the city address on Feb. 8, would develop and implement a vision for the city that would extend to the year 2050.  Hobgood said he was, “optimistically determined that this year will be a banner year for our city," during his address on Feb. 8. He hopes that the city council, with which he has often had a contentious relationship, would put their differences aside to support the committee. The council will also discuss the slate of candidates brought forth by Hobgood for all city committees. The city council…

City Council Approves Fire Bond Referendum

Citizens will be able to vote whether or not to approve up to $6 million in bonds to pay for up to three new fire stations in Canton.

The Canton City Council voted to authorize a special election which will allow voters to have their say on a proposed $6 million bond to construct up to three new fire stations within city limits. "This referendum will be held out of respect for the taxpayers," said councilman Bill Bryan. "I think it's a historical day that council is allowing taxpayers a say in this measure. We think of enough of y'all to let you make the decision." Councilman Hooky Huffman echoed Bryan's sentiments, and responded to statements made by citizens during the public comment session that city leaders lacked vision. "This is the first step in our vision for the city," Huffman said. "I would have to question the vision of those who are against this." If voters …

Canton Firms Up Etowah River Park Wish List

The council this morning directed the city manager to spell out its wishes in a letter to the county.

Over the years, movement on a city-county park project has been delayed by revisions and other hiccups. During a special called meeting today, the Canton City Council decided to "stick to its guns" and tell the county that it wants $3.1 million to build the long-awaited Etowah River Park, which will be paid for through the county's $90-million parks bond program. Council members also finalized a list of extras that they say the county must incorporate in the park. They want a bridge over the Etowah River. They want lighting. They want irrigation. And they want playgrounds. "Do your hard numbers," Council member Bob Rush said. "Do your bids. But if we can’t get a million dollars extra for the things that we need to put in the park, then we …
