Cherokee Leaders "Very Pleased" With Property Value Jump

After years of managing declining property tax revenue, the upswing is welcome news for Cherokee leaders.

The news of an increase in Cherokee County property tax values is not falling on deaf ears among local leaders. The county learned last week that its gross tax digest grew to nearly $7.4 billion in 2013, up from $7.2 billion in 2012. Cherokee County Chief Appraiser John Adams said after exemptions, the total net taxable digest is up by 3 percent for the county and up 2.8 percent for the school portion of property taxes. County Commission Chair Buzz Ahrens said he was "very pleased" with the initial results overall. The county was hoping to see either a 1 or 2 percent increase in property values, "so the out-of-the box 3 percent is a great message and starting point." He noted there could be some "erosion" of the increase due to the appeals…

While two suspects have been identified in the March 27 robbery in Canton, a third man remains unknown.

While two Atlanta men have been identified as the suspects in the March 27 robbery of RaceTrac on Marietta Highway near I-575 in Canton, the Cherokee Sheriff's Office still needs the public to help them identify the third suspect in the case. Detectives have secured arrest warrants for Larry Hightower, 33, and Marcus Dominique Strozier, 21, who both hail from Atlanta. Both men are wanted for robbery and false imprisonment. Hightower is currently behind bars at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center for violation of probation charges while Strozier and the third unidentified suspect have not been located. However, authorities believe Strozier is in the Atlanta area. The suspects around 11 p.m. on March 27 allegedly entered the Racetrac and …

Cherokee County Formalizes Plan For Canton Fire Consolidation

The city would pay the county from its general fund the equavilent of the millage rate charged to residents in unincorporated Cherokee County.

Despite the majority of the Canton City Council opposing consolidating fire services with Cherokee County, leaders with the county government are still not ready to give up on striking a deal.  Cherokee County Manager Jerry Cooper on Friday released two documents, a proposed ordinance and a proposed agreement, that spell out what consolidating means for both sides.  The proposal calls for the county to construct a new fire station near the Laurel Canyon and Great Sky neighborhoods along Highway 140 and another near Commerce Boulevard and Highway 140, which would be near the replacement Northside Hospital-Cherokee facility. The county would then transfer its staffing and equipment from Station 9 to the new station near the two neighborhoods…

Can we please get the entire document that the County submitted? I would love to see the consolidation as the other day when Woodstock requested both of the Ladder trucks from Canton the County had to move their fire engines into the City to cover the citizens since there are not enough people to run the ladders and the engines, unlike the County who have a fire engine and ladder truck fully …   more ›

We have been involved in two accidents at this same location. The problem seems to be the people turning into Racetrac getting the clear sign for one lane that is stopped for the light and assuming no traffic is coming for the lane that traffic keeps flowing because they are not required to stop at the light. They continue on down Knox Bridge.   more ›
