Family, Friends Offer $3K Reward in Cartersville Car Wash Slaying

The family of Canton native R.J. Statler, 28, who was shot in the back of the head during an apparent robbery at Sun Glo Car Wash in Cartersville, is "just devastated."

Family and friends of R.J. Statler, the Cartersville man shot and killed Sunday night at Sun Glo Car Wash, are offering a collective $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible. Word of the reward, which began at $1,000, came as Statler's family and friends gathered to honor the Canton native and 2002 graduate of nearby Cherokee High School. Statler's uncle, Rennie Statler, confirmed the reward had grown to $3,000 and said the family is "just devastated" when asked how they're coping with the loss. "There’s no real words to answer that. As we saw on the Patch, the vigil it showed, at least 150 people came out," he said. "This kid was cleaning his car and someone came up behind him and shot him in the back …

What Crimes Happen Where in Canton-Sixes

Data from CrimeReports.com and the Canton Police Department indicate Canton-Sixes residents experience more thefts and break-ins than other types of crime.

Thefts, specifically shoplifting and car break-ins are the top two crimes affecting the city of Canton, according to the Canton Police Deparment, which has compiled crime data in the last several months. Police Chief Bob Merchant, who joined the force in May after the former assistant chief was fired, plans to anaylze the information databased on CrimeReports.com, then implement data-driven approaches to curtail crime and boost traffic safety in Canton. He's from Florida, where he was involved in a similar program he says was successful in reducing crime and the severity of traffic crashes.  "There's a lot of good things that can be derived from meeting and discussing and analyzing and I'm all about that," Merchant told Canton-Sixes Patch…

Canton Police Searching for Shoplifters

The Police Department is asking for the public's help in identifying the suspects.

The Canton Police Department needs your help in identifying shoplifters who have been active in the area. The three male suspects have allegedly stolen video games and other electronic merchandise from Target over the last several weeks. Alleged Father-Son Fight Leads to Stabbing

The incident occurred Sunday afternoon in Canton.

An alleged tussle between a Canton father and son on Sunday afternoon left one man in the hospital and one man in jail. The Canton Police Department said in a release that Anthony Johnson, Sr., 53, has been arrested for aggravated battery in the stabbing of his 25-year-old son, Anthony Johnson, Jr. The younger Johnson was transported to Northside Hospital-Cherokee by his father after being stabbed at the home of Mary Williams, who is the mother of the elder Johnson. After he delivered his son to the hospital, the elder Johnson left the scene. Canton and Beyond React to Jorelys' Death

What began as a missing-child case ended in a way the filled social media with shock, anger, sadness and prayers.

People in Canton, around Cherokee County, throughout the metro Atlanta area and in the wider world were drawn to the search by the Canton Police Department and the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office for 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera, who went missing from her River Ridge apartment complex in Canton on Friday. As the search turned from a missing-child case to a suspected abduction, the Canton Elementary School first-grader gained more attention through Twitter and Facebook. Those social media erupted with grief, shock and anger as word came out Monday afternoon that not only was Jorelys dead, but she had been beaten and sexually assaulted, then dumped in a trash bin.
