Water and Sewer rates may be upwardly adjusted during a future Canton City Council meeting, but discussion on the topic will begin Thursday evening.
The Canton City Council will look at a possible sewer and water rate increase and approving a settlement payout to a former Canton Police Department sergeant during their meeting this evening. Councilman Bill Bryan added a last-minute agenda item to the agenda, which deals with a possible 4.5 percent increase on water and sewer rates for the next five years. The rates were last raised in June, 2011 by 30 percent. A second important proposal before the board is the approval of the $107,000 settlement between the city and former police sergeant Stacy Bailey, who sued the city last year for alleged violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Earlier this week, both parties expressed satisfaction with the settlement. City attorney Robert …

The city is prepared to tender an almost $20,000 contract to a third-party consulting firm to examine fire service funding options, but without a plan in place some council members feel the move is premature.
CORRECTION: The fire services study passed by a three to one margin, as councilmen Bill Bryan and Hooky Huffman were not in attendance during the meeting. The City of Canton will soon award a $19,940 contract to a consulting firm for an outsider's view on fire service funding in the city. During Thursday's city council meeting, the board voted to award the contract to Ecological Planning Group, who had done a similar study for the city of Garden City. According to Councilman Bob Rush, Ecological Planning Group will investigate ways to fund a hybrid volunteer force in its study at no additional cost. The question of whether or not hybridization options were part of the scope of the Garden City study prevented the council from awarding the …

The newly-appointed members of the commision intended to develop an economic plan for the city will be officially sworn in tonight.
The citizen commission that Mayor Gene Hobgood and the Canton City Council hopes can lay out a clear long-term vision for economic development in a city criticised for a "lack of vision" will receive its swearing-in during the council's regular meeting Thursday evening. Hobgood called for the creation of the Commission on Canton's Future in his state of the city address on Feb. 7, declaring that he was, "optimistically determined that this year will be a banner year for our city." During his Feb. 7 address, Hobgood described his thoughts on the balancing act the commission would need to perform between fiscal responsibility and marked improvements to Canton which would make the city a banner destination for businesses and new residents. …

The Canton City Council looked at ways to enforce retention pond quality standards and expressed concern that the city's bond referendum may fail because of "misleading" information.
CORRECTION: As pointed out by Jeff Brown, Councilman Beresford is searching for those responsible for the post card campaign against the fire bond, and not Brown himself. Brown is not affiliated with the senders of the post cards. ORIGINAL ARTICLE: The Canton City Council heavily discussed one issue that wasn't apparent yesterday morning and continued the discussion of a very controversial measure during their regular meeting Thursday evening. A simple zoning condition amendment on two properties in the 490 block of Hospital Road served as a springboard for a lengthy talk on the city's retention ponds. According to Ken Patton, Director of Community Development, the fixed properties are a 16-unit apartment complex that have been purchased …

Glen you know good and well that due to Canton's biennial election cycle and the resulting staggered terms of office, no matter when the raises are brought in there will always be some members of the council who will benefit financially from their own vote.   more ›
