Snow Break Aids Creekview Wrestlers

The state duals have been postponed because of snow, and that's just fine for Creekview.

With the snow from last week’s storm almost gone, people slowly will get their lives back in order and into a routine schedule. It won’t be quite so easy for Cherokee County sports teams.

Not only could teams not travel to participate in sporting events, but state rules mandate that if school is canceled, teams cannot meet or practice, much less play.

Hit extremely hard was the wrestling team. Prior to the snow storm, Creekview qualified for the state duals, a tournament originally scheduled to be held in Macon, Ga. Since many Georgia schools were canceled all week, the state tournament was postponed until Feb. 25.

The location has changed as well. No longer will the teams travel to Macon to a centralized location. The state duals will be split into five tournaments – separated by regional classification – and moved to five different locations. Creekview head coach Wyatt Wilkie isn’t bothered by the change.

“It would have been nice for our guys to experience the Duals in Macon,” said Wilkie. “But honestly, we are glad to be participating in this event for the first time in school history, and we will be glad to travel to the designated location.”

As far as where they’ll be travelling, Wilkie doesn’t yet know. The Georgia High School Association hasn’t made all the necessary arrangements with host sites. Until everything is solidified, the participating schools will wait to be told where to go.

The wait, and more to the point, the extra time will be beneficial to Creekview, according to their head coach.

“I think the postponement will help our team,” said Wilkie. “We will have some guys in our lineup at their preferred weight class and, weather permitting we don't miss anymore practice; we will be physically in the best shape of the season.”

To stay in shape, Wilkie said his boys ran at home and found ways to work out in the house where they could. Some even ventured out to training centers to get their work in. But when it came to coaching, Wilkie had to stay away because of the rules keeping teams from meeting when school is canceled.

“There is much work that can be done at home by a serious athlete,” said Wilkie. “(There is) running, sprints, pull ups and sit ups and other various activities that promote conditioning.”

And now that schools are back in session, Wilkie will get his boys wrestling as much as possible to prepare for the state duals. “The best way to get in wrestling shape is to wrestle.”
