Old-Fashioned Hate? Georgia Tech Says Basketball Transfer Can't Pick Bulldogs

Tech says it's "pretty standard" to block the transfer of an athlete to a rival school.

Dawg gone it, this should create some Buzz.

The “Old-Fashioned Hate” between Georgia and Georgia Tech extends beyond the gridiron.

The two rivals are now squabbling over a basketball player — Georgia Tech’s Robert Carter, Jr., a former star at Shiloh High School in Snellville. Carter is transferring and Georgia was interested, but Tech said no.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporters working both sides say Georgia isn’t happy with Tech’s block, but Tech says it’s just invoking a “pretty standard” practice for transfers.

Tech is allowed to block the transfer of its student-athletes to ACC programs or to schools which are common opponents every year — such as Georgia. Georgia says it doesn’t restrict its transfers.

Carter reportedly considered signing with Georgia out of high school.
Check out this column by the AJC’s Mark Bradley, who writes “Tech is justified in its stance.”

Carter, a power forward, averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds for Tech last season.
