Creekview Wrestlers Finish Top 6 In Georgia AAAAA Team Duals Championship

The Grizzlies had their best finish ever at the Team Duals.

Creekview traveled to Macon on Thursday to battle the top 16 teams in Georgia's Division AAAAA.Β  After bouts on Thursday through Saturday, the Grizzlies had aΒ career best top 6 finish.Β

Thursday night,Β Creekview was matched up against Jones County.Β  Β Pins from Grant Slater (113), Justin Goss (120), Michael Edwards (138), John Cowart (152), Hunter Smith (160), Hunter Udall (170), Joseph Sorrentino (182), Logan Ridings (195) and Christian Saragusa (220) led to a 61-18 Creekview victory.

Friday morning, the Grizzlies would faceΒ #2 seed Woodland.Β  Logan Ridings (195 lbs) started the day out right with a pin over Isiah Ross of Woodland in 46 seconds.Β  Brock Tupman (285) and Ryan Camp (106)Β also pinned their opponents.Β  The rest of the match went back and forth, but Creekview could not recover from a forfeit from a missing wrestler in the lineup at 132 lbs and and lostΒ the hard foughtΒ battle 32-33.

Creekview fell into the consolation bracket and started the climb to a potential third place.Β  South West Dekalb was next.Β  After a quick start, including a pin from Saragusa (220), things slowed down for the Grizzlies and they fell behind 15-21 with Michael Edwards (138)Β coming up.Β  A win by decision from Edwards brought them closer at 18-21.Β  A win by Cowart (152) and a pin by Smith (160) tied it up at 27-27.Β  Major Decisions by Udall (170) and Sorrentino (182) put Creekview up 35-27 and sealed theΒ victory for the Grizzlies.Β  The final was 35-30

The final match of the day would see CreekviewΒ take on Loganville.Β  The Grizzlies have competed locally with the Red Devils and knew they would be a challenge.Β  Once again,Β Creekview would be giving up a forfeit at 132 lbsΒ as they have all season.Β  Pins from Tupman (285), Slater (113) and Goss (120) quickly put the Grizzlies up 18-6.Β  Loganville started piling on wins in the middleweights and with the exception of a 5-4 decision from Edwards (138), Creekview was in the middle of aΒ five bout dry streak with the Grizzlies trailing 21-30.Β  Hunter Udall (170) broke the streak with a 6-0 decision and Joseph Sorrentino (182) got the pin in 1:08 to tie things up 30-30.Β  After a loss at 195, the final match would be fought with a score of 33-30 and a Red Devils advantage.Β  Christian Saragusa (220), a sophmore, battled and eventually pinned his opponent in the second period to win the match 36-33.Β  This win would advance the team to wrestle against Ware County Gators and a chance to wrestle for 3rd or 4th place on Saturday.

The final match was against #4 seeded Ware County.Β  The Grizzlies went down 0-12 in the first three bouts, but were given new life by pins from Dakota Short (126) and Michael Edwards (138) to bring the score to 12-18.Β  Cowart (152) and Smith (160) brought the score to 20-21, but the rest of the lineup struggled to get wins.Β  Sam Tupman (285) finished with a pin, but the Grizzlies fell 26-39 to Ware County.

The future looks bright for Creekview.Β  Even though they did not realize their goal of a top 4 finish, they placed higher than ever before.Β Β Aditionally, with a strong core of underclassmen and a program loaded with coaching talent, the next few years hold much promise.
