Creekview Gets the Win Over Rival Sequoyah 17-14

Friday night in Canton was one of the best local battles in Cherokee County football.  Canton rivals, Creekview and Sequoyah went head to head in a defensive fight to the end.

The Grizzlies struck first with a Kyle Wilkie (10 QB) to Chandler Wold (18) touchdown in the first quarter.  Sequoyah answered back with an interception that turned into 7 points to tie it up at 7 each.

After a couple of possession changes from both teams, the Chiefs would score on a run from just outside the 20 to make it 14-7 Sequoyah with less than 3 minutes left in the half.

Connor Dulmage (5) would then get a huge kickoff return to put Creekview inside the Chief's 30 yard line.  The Grizzlies would eventually settle for a Ben McClellan (89) field goal to close in 14-10.

The Chief's would take over from there.  As the half came to a close, the Grizzlies would cause a fumble and take possession with only 33 seconds left.  QB Kyle Wilkie (10) would throw a strike to Chandler Wold (10) to take the lead 17-14 for the remainder of the game.

RB Isaiah Rodgers (27) was able to seal the win with a huge run for a Grizzly first down late in the 4th.

Regardless of how many times Sequoyah took possession of the ball, the Creekview defense held strong.  Sequoyah had averaged over 34 points a game on offense until meeting the Grizzlies.  Creekview would eventually hold them to less than half of their average.  The Grizzlies have been able to hold their opponents this year to an average of just over 19 points. This defense will give this new team a chance to win deep into the season.

Although there were many Grizzly defenders that contributed, the top defenders are Zach Chester (52), Dawson Ewers (4), Austin Murphy (21) and Nick Fahrnbauer (25) with 5 tackles.  Walter Grogan (3) had 6 solo tackles and Joseph Sorrentino (38) led the team with 8 solo tackles on the evening.

When asked about game preparation for this week, Coach Crowder simply said, "It's the way you practice, it's the way you go about film work.  All those things make you successful.  I just told the kids that great players play great in big games and I need some great players to make big plays".

It seemed to work.
