Trending in NYC right now-Maxi style.

Maxi dresses are a style that every woman can wear! Don't be afraid, go get you some style for summer.

My best friend just returned from a trip to the Big Apple and said the maxi was everywhere!  Just in case you don’t know the term, maxi refers to a long skirt or dress.  While most people think of this as a 1970’s style, maxis really became popular in the 1960s and here they are, back again!  Now they say if you lived through it once, you shouldn’t wear it when it comes back into style again.  But I beg to differ.  I think maxi dresses and skirts can be worn by all ages and body types.  The maxi dress can function as an elegant flowing dinner dress, beachwear, a casual dinner party dress, a snazzy date night dress or as a lunch date with the girls outfit.

Whatever style you call it, hippie, boho, or just retro, I think it is time you considered purchasing a maxi skirt or dress if you haven’t already.  There are a few simple things to consider when you want to take the plunge.  I once had a local shop owner tell me, “It doesn’t matter what you wear to the party, just make sure it fits perfectly”.  This is especially true with the maxi.

I believe length is one of the most important aspects of fit.  Taller women look great with the hem line all the way to the ground.  But I am a petite woman, and for those of you who find yourself in my “short” category, your first thought may be that you should not wear this dress at all.  Au contraire! In my experience, the length of the dress needs to be a little shorter, more like the 1970s maxi, where it hits right at your ankles. Honestly, even tall willowy types look better when the skirt or dress does not drag the ground excessively.  As for fit, it pays to either
buy a petite or tall size if you need one, or have it altered to suit you.  Also, petite women should avoid too many flowing fabrics and stick with a maxi that’s a little more tailored and closer to the body.   Large patterns often aren’t the best choice
for smaller or shorter women either.  Unfortunately I know this from viewing a picture of myself in just such a dress.

My best find this year was a petite maxi dress that I ordered from Lands End that
fits perfectly- so of course I bought two.  J Crew also has great petite maxis.
Athleta carries tall maxis for those of you blessed with long legs.  So, no matter your size, if you pay attention to the length, the pattern and type of material, and what suits you, then you should be able to wear the latest trend.

Just imagine…maxi dress, sparkly sandals, dazzling jewelry, a summer beverage of your choice in hand on the veranda…NYC style right here in the
south!
