School Board To Confirm Marlow Sanction

The Cherokee School Board will consider approving the final order affirming its October ruling that Kelly Marlow violated board policies.

The Cherokee County School Board tonight will consider approving the final order stating District 1 member violated its ethics policies when she wrote a letter asking AdvancED to investigate the district.

The board will vote to confirm the ruling, as well as the $3,600 fine tacked onto the ruling, during its meeting tonight, which gets underway at 7 p.m. at the historic Canton High School/School Board Auditorium.

The board voted in October to confirm Marlow violated board policy BH Domain 1: Governance Structure, which indicates board members must recognize authority rests with the board as a whole and not individual members; and Domain 7: Conduct as a Board Member, which notes members must not take any "private action" that would compromise the board or district's administration.

Board Member Michael Geist has also placed on the agenda a proposed amendment to board policy in relation to how the board keeps its meeting minutes.

Geist is proposing that any reports or documents "relating to a formal motion that are presented to the Board of Education during a meeting by employees of the district or individual board members and that have not been previously published shall be published as attachments to the minutes."

The board will also consider approving its 2014 legislative program and updating its five-year strategic plan.
