School Board Now Accepting Applications To Fill District 1 Seat

At least one candidate has announced plans to submit her application for consideration as the interim Cherokee County School Board District 1 member.

Residents who live in District 1 can now submit their applications to the Cherokee County School Board to be considered for appointment to the seat on an interim basis.

The Cherokee County School Board approved the application process to fill the vacancy, which occurred when Kelly Marlow resigned after she was convicted on two counts of felony false statement charges.

To be considered, the application must be completed, signed before a notary public and received by board attorney Tom Roach on or by 5 p.m. Thursday, June 5.

All applications must be mailed to: Roach, Caudill and Gunn LLP, PO Box 677, Canton, GA 30169. The application is posted on the home page of the school district's website and is also attached in .PDF format in the article.

The board will vote on June 19 to make the appointment, and the interim member will serve until Nov. 4 when the board will hold a special election to fill the seat.

The candidate elected will serve out the remainder of Marlow's term, which ends Dec. 31, 2016.

One resident, Kyla Cromer, has announced her plans to submit her application to be considered.

"My motivation for seeking this appointment comes from my desire to restore integrity and true representation on the school board for the students, parents and taxpayers of our community," she said. "I believe my experience as a teacher, community volunteer and PTA leader make me an excellent candidate for consideration by the Board."

Cromer faced off with Marlow in 2012 for the seat, which represents BridgeMill and areas of Canton and Holly Springs. Marlow defeated Cromer by 24 votes.

Cromer went on to add that through her "extensive" work with parents throughout the district, she's "demonstrated the qualities of leadership, teamwork and humility" that are needed to be a dedicated representative of her community.

Cromer received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, taught for a number of year and worked as education director at Sylvan Learning Center in Woodstock. She's also the past president of the Freedom Middle School PTSA.
