Reinhardt Launches Plan To Cultivate Young Writers

The Etowah Valley Young Writers Institute will be held for two weeks in June.

Reinhardt University in the summer will launch an initiative designed to reach out to students who are looking to become talented writers.

The school will host its inaugural Etowah Valley Young Writers Institute on its campus in Waleska. The initiative will expose rising 10th, 11th and 12th grade students to "popular disciples in the genre of creative writing," Reinhardt said in a news release.

“The institute will be an opportunity for aspiring young writers to learn what it takes to become a published writer,” said Institute Director Dr. Donna Coffey, who is also an English professor.

The institute will include two week-long sessions — June 16-20 and June 23-27 — in which students will be able to participate in four work-shop style courses on personal narrative, poetry and screenwriting.

All courses, which are $315 each, will be taught by Reinhardt faculty with proficiencies in those subject areas.

Each week will culminate on Friday night with a reading for parents and an award
for the top writers of the week. An anthology of all students’ work will be created and available in e-book or print form.

While it's in its pilot phase, Coffey is confident the initiative will develop into a comprehensive summer program that empowers the creativity of students.

“We have a staff of dynamic, publishing faculty members ready to ignite students’ passion for writing," she added.
