Hasty Makes AYP

In a revised Georgia Department of Education report, Clayton Elementary and Cherokee High remain on list of district schools that failed to meet annual student progress goals.

Today, it became one of five Cherokee schools that came off of that list.

"We are now very happy to report that ... Hasty, and and and have now met these requirements, based on the results of re-tests administered in May showing an increase in the percentage of students meeting or exceeding the standards of the" Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (GCRCT), Cherokee Superintendent Frank Petruzielo said in a news release this afternoon.

remains on the list because the school's economically disadvantaged population failed to meet math benchmarks set by the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Meanwhile,  still carries the "Needs Improvement" label it received in July. Schools receive that designation when they fail to meet Adequate Yearly Progresss targets two years in a row. Cherokee High's students with disabilities population failed to meet AYP in the area of math and graduation rates.

"Needs Improvement" status has escalating consequences.

"School choice is one of them," Georgia Department of Education spokesman Matt Cardoza told Canton-Sixes Patch back in July. "Sometimes, schools will choose free tutoring. It depends on the system which one they choose to do first."

In today's release, Petruzielo said Cherokee High and will offer "expanded Supplemental Education Services to students who need additional academic assistance, via the Instructional Extension Program."

Polaris also received "Needs Improvement" status.

"While this service has always been available to students in all of our schools, additional resources in this regard will be provided to both Polaris Evening School and Cherokee HS in 2011-12."
