Hasty, Canton, Moore Show Significant CRCT Gains

Students in third-, fourth- and fifth-grade at Ball Ground, , , and elementary schools topped the state averages in all five Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests content areas, the Georgia Department of Education announced.

Hickory Flat and Knox students also pulled off the state feat in sixth-grade as well. students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade also surpassed state averages on the examinations.

Six of the 11 Canton-Sixes Patch area schools in the Cherokee County School District topped state averages on the CRCT.

The CRCT measures third- to eighth-grade students’ abilities in reading, English/language arts, math, science and social studies.

Students in third-, fifth- and eighth-grade must meet or exceed the grade requirements on the CRCT in reading to advance according to state law. Fifth- and eighth-grade students also need to meet or exceed expectations on the CRCT in mathematics to move on to the next grade.

third graders improved their social studies score 9.6 percent to 76.3 percent meeting or exceeding the standard and English/language arts score 7.6 percent to 86 percent. Ball Ground students bettered their social studies score 9.1 percent to 90.3 percent. Hasty’s science scores tumbled 14.7 percent to 66.3 percent.

Moore fourth graders significantly improved their social studies, science and math scores. The students’ social studies score jumped 19.4 percent to 86.1 percent, the science score increased 15.2 percent to 88.1 percent and the math score was raised 12.4 percent to 93.8 percent. improved its science score 10.7 percent to 76.7 percent.

Clayton fourth graders improved their social studies score 9.5 percent to 75.5 percent, but their science scores fell 7.3 percent to 77.6 percent. Hickory Flats’ math scores jumped 9.2 percent to 92.4 percent. 's scores dropped in four of the five content areas with the largest dip in math at 16.2 percent to 62.1 percent.

Fifth-grade Canton students raised their score average 23.9 percent in math to 90.2 percent. The class also made strides in English/language arts with a 14.5 percent jump to 95.2 percent meeting or exceed the standard. They also raised their reading score 12.3 percent to 94.2 percent.

Hasty fifth graders turned in a strong performance with vastly improved scores in all five content areas. Their social studies score shot up 22.5 percent to 66.7 percent, their math score jumped 21.9 percent to 80 percent and their science score went up 17.7 percent to 72.4 percent.

Fifth grade students at Knox posted 100 percent scores in reading and math. Ball Ground students notched a 100 percent in English/language arts and Sixes fifth graders earned a 99 percent in math.

Moore sixth graders raised their math score 6.7 percent to 95.1 percent, but their scores in science and social studies fell dramatically. Their science score dropped from 81.7 percent in 2010 to 54 percent this year – a 27.7 percent drop. Their social studies score went from 52.1 percent in 2010 to 39.1 percent this year.

Freedom seventh graders recorded scores of 92.9 percent or better in all five categories, highlighted by a 98.5 percent score in reading. students improved their scores in all five content areas. The students’ social studies scores increased by 8.5 percent to 75.4 percent and the science jumped 8.4 percent to 85.1 percent.

Teasley eighth graders raised their math 15.3 percent to 84.1 percent meeting or exceeding the standard.
