Freedom PTA Leader Enters Race

Kyla Cromer will face Kelly Marlow in the race for Cherokee Board of Education Post 1.

has drawn her first challenger in the race for  Post 1.

Kyla Cromer, the co-president of the PTA, announced today that she plans to run for the seat, which takes in BridgeMill, , , and parts of the Holly Springs, Toonigh and Univeter areas.

Cromer, the mother of two daughters, a Freedom Middle student and a  student, said "her vast education experience and long-standing involvement in the county’s education community make her uniquely qualified to serve all of the children in Cherokee County."

She received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Miami University in Oxford, OH, taught for a number of years, worked as education director at Sylvan Learning Center in Woodstock and served on an ad hoc committee that urged Cherokee voters to .

"Our elected state officials have ," she wrote on the Canton-Sixes Patch message board in early March. "My hope is that the next ten years for CCSD schools is as productive and successful as the last 10, but fear that the impact of HB 1223 will make that extremely difficult. Congrats to Mr.Jerguson et al...you may have won this battle but at what cost to our community?"

If elected, Cromer said she would build upon the district's successes, find "creative ways to have the least impact upon student success as it relates to our challenging budget" and move forward the , a new system of specialized programs that will offer students more school choice opportunities in fields such as fine arts and technology.

The  will launch one of its four science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) academies at  and one of its two fine arts academies at  at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year, the district has announced.
