Five Canton Residents Awarded UGA Scholarships

1. Five Canton residents, all of them incoming freshmen at the University of Georgia, have been named 2011-12 Charter Scholarship recipients. The award provides $1,000 per year in addition to the HOPE Scholarship to Georgia high school graduates. The Canton recipients include: Β 

    • Lawson Chambers (Parents: Mr. and Mrs. David C. Chambers)
    • Blair Christensen (Parents: Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Christensen)
    • Collin Ingram (Parents: Mr. and Mrs. Richard K. Ingram)
    • Haley Huskins (Parents: Mr. and Mrs. Scott and Theresa Huskins)
    • Allison Griffin (Parents: Mr. and Mrs. Millard and Becky Griffin)

2. plans to move to a new $250 million facility near Canton Marketplace by March 2015, officials announced Thursday. Read more about it .

4. Due to the heat index, the ο»Ώο»Ώ had to cancel all outdoor activities from noon to 6 for the second day in a row on Thursday. The district has made special considerations to keep students safe and hydrated.

5. At last count Thursday, spokeswoman Barbara Jacoby said approximately 38,499 students were enrolled in Cherokee schools, an increase of 186 students from last school year's day No. 4 count. That number is still shy of the district's projection of 39,336.
