Couple Finds Keepsakes of Late Georgia Tech President Inside Old Camper

Military keepsakes believed to have been owned by a former Georgia Tech president were found inside an old camper a Canton couple is refurbishing. They want to get the items to the man's survivors.

When a Canton couple purchased an old camper to fix up, they didn’t know it was the beginning of a treasure hunt.

Andrew and Michelle Gunter have been refurbishing a 1978 Apache camper. When Andrew pulled off the covering to an electrical panel he found a box tucked behind it with keepsakes from the World War II era, reports WSB TV.

The heirlooms included silver stars indicating the rank of commander in the Navy, a pistol, a medal awarded to engineers engraved with the name Dr. Edwin D. Harrison.

Harrison, who died in 2001, was the sixth president of the Georgia Institute of Technology, leading its desegregation efforts in the 1960s without a court order.

“I would think the family would want this and this at the very least back,” Michelle Gunter told the TV station.

She hopes media coverage can put them in touch with Harrison’s survivors to return the memorabilia.
