Cherokee's ACT Scores Best State, National Average

Of the five high schools in the district, Etowah had the top score.

seniors posted a higher ACT average than their state and national counterparts, Superintendent Frank Petruzielo said today.

“CCSD continues to improve each year and perform above not only the state average but also the national average,” he wrote in a memo to the Board of Education.

Approximately 1,053 Cherokee seniors—49 percent of the most recent graduating class—took the ACT in 2011. Along with the SAT, some colleges and universities require the test for admission as well as placement.

Students are tested in English, mathematics, reading and science. A 36 is a perfect score.

The average in Cherokee was 22.3. Nationally, it was 21.1. The statewide average dropped a tenth of a point from 20.7 in 2010 to 20.6 in 2011.

Of the five high schools in Cherokee, had the best average: 23.2. was second (22.4); , third (22.2); , fourth (21.8); and , fifth (21.7).

This school year, Cherokee students have five chances to take the ACT at a local high school. Testing dates are Sept. 10, Oct. 22, Dec. 10, Feb. 11 and April 14.
