Animal Shelter's $100K Challenge: Save 1,000 Pets

1. If you're looking for ways to promote your line of crafts, jewelry, homemade products and other gift items, the  PTA wants to hear from you. The group is adding a new component to its annual Fall Festival, scheduled for 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 7. The "Sixes Market" will give vendors a designated space to advertise and sell items that appeal to the Sixes community. Contact Anne Reed at fallfestival@sixespta.org for more information.

2. Wondering what it takes to gain admission to college? Mark your calendars for 5 p.m. Sept. 27. At that time, more than 75 admissions representatives from two-year colleges, four-year universities, technical colleges and the Georgia Student Finance Commission are expected at the the 2011 Cherokee County PROBE College Fair at . For information, call CHS counselor Carol Baumgartner at 770-479-4112.

3. Canton-Sixes Patch is looking for its next . If you think your child, student or protege is worthy of this honor, nominate them as many times as you'd like. The winner's photograph and mini-bio will appear on the site at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

4. The is competing for a $100,000 grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The shelter is attempting to save nearly 1,000 pets between Aug. 1 and Oct. 31. As of Aug. 17, the shelter had helped more than 135 pets, said Lori Kekel, the facility's event and rescue coordinator. In its profile, Cherokee staff said the shelter "would use the prize for animal enrichment, updated and healthier animal housing and future adoption events."

5. Between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, have your pet microchipped for just $20. This will ensure that your dogs and cats are returned to you in the event they wander away from home. Open the PDF for more information.
