Year in Review: Jorelys Rivera

Since Tuesday, Canton-Sixes Patch has taken a look back at some of the top local stories of 2011. No other story gripped Canton as much as the abduction and murder of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera did.

The story: Jorelys Rivera, a first-grader, was  near a playground at the apartment community where she lived. Sixty-five local, state and federal investigators worked to find Jorelys. Hours after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Child Abduction Response Team joined the search at 7 a.m. Dec. 5, authorities  in a compacting Dumpster from the apartment complex. An autopsy found that she likely died 60 to 90 minutes after she disappeared. Jorelys had been , GBI director Vernon Keenan said at a Dec. 6 press conference.

From the story: "Calling it a 'very horrific and brutal murder,' he said the crime was 'very calculated and planned.' "

The rest of the story: On Dec. 7, law enforcement arrested , a 20-year-old River Ridge maintenance worker who Keenan said had access to the trash compactor. He remains in isolation in the on charges of murder and making false statements. A date for his arraignment has not been set.

What happens next: Cherokee County District Attorney Garry Moss' office is expected to file additional charges against Brunn in the near future.
