Among the items on the agenda:

  • The council will . Currently, Sunday sales are prohibited. Earlier this year, Gov. Nathan Deal signed legislation that allows counties and cities to vote on the measure. on the Nov. 8 ballot.
  • The council will adopt an ordinance that will spell out regulations for the city-owned Southview Cemetery. During , city attorney Bobby Dyer said the ordinance is based on the city of Rome's cemetery ordinance. At , he said Canton would only have a role in maintenance and overseeing ownership of lots.
  • The council will accept 22.7 acres of land above the Bluffs from Bellfra LLC. "By them donating that, they would get certain tax credits," Mayor Gene Hobgood said during the Sept. 1 meeting. The land will be used for passive recreational uses. In other words, it will be used for a park.
  • The council will award—on a conditional basis—a $54,933 bid to Radiance Solar to install a 15 kW solar photovoltaic power system at the . The city received an Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant from the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority and the U.S. Department of Energy to replace HVAC units at the , the and the IT server room at . Additionally, Canton replaced and upgraded light fixtures at the fire department, the police department and the street department. The city has applied for additional GEFA funds to install the power system at the Canton Police Department. It is waiting on a decision from GEFA.
  • The council will accept the Community Development Department's recommendation that the City Council charge residents $100 per residential plan review submitted for new construction and $25 for additions and alterations. The city would begin assessing the fees on Jan. 3, 2012. During the , the council voted to implement a residential plan review program. That move could help the city maintain its Insurance Service Office rating—and save homeowners from property insurance hikes. The rating is used to set property insurance rates.
