Measure will allow Sunday alcohol sales in Canton between 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.

Canton voters want their liquor on Sundays, according to unofficial returns from the ο»Ώ.

About 1,589 people voted on the issue. More than 71 percent voted for Sunday alcohol sales compared to 28.45 percent who didn't.

In June, that put the issue in the voters' hands.

A number of Georgia municipalities, among them, took similar action earlier this year after Gov. Nathan Deal signed legislation that allows counties and cities to vote on Sunday alcohol sales.

The county's alcohol referendum passed, too.

Restaurants in many places already allow sales by the drink on Sundays. The measure passed by voters in Canton and Cherokee will allow packaged alcohol sales in liquor stores, grocery stores and convenience stores between 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.

Until tonight, that was prohibited.
