News Near Canton: Holly Springs Council Rejects Gas Station

The city council on Monday voted to deny a request to build a convenience store with gasoline sales near the Harmony on the Lakes subdivision.

A controversial request to build a convenience store along a busy state highway was voted down by the Holly Springs City Council.

The council on Monday voted 3-0 to reject an annexation, rezoning and conditional use permit request from Macon-based developer Jim Rollins to build a convenience store with gasoline sales on about 3.2 acres at 3907 and 3925 Hickory Flat Highway.

Council members Dee Phillips and Jeremy Smith were not present.

Rollins wanted to utilize the property to build a Flash Foods convenience store, and would have situated the development in front of the northern entrance of the Harmony on the Lakes subdivision.

The proposal drew widespread opposition from local residents, many of which lived inside the neighborhood.

A petition was circulated and garnered around 200 signatures of residents who expressed their reservations about the project, according to the Cherokee Tribune

Rollins is the same developer that's courted the owner of Bell's Store in the Buffington community to sell his property so he could build a similar development.

Rolins has not returned calls for comment.
