GDOT Eyes Highway 20 Improvements in Cherokee
An open house on a proposal to install truck climbing lanes and perform intersection improvements will be held next Tuesday in Canton.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is asking the public to come out and review a proposal to improve S.R. 20 in Canton next week.
GDOT will hold an public information open house to discuss the proposed project, which will bring improvements on the highway between its interchange at Interstate 575 to Scott Road.
The open house is slated to be held between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 29 at the Northside Hospital-Cherokee Conference Center in Canton.
"We would like to hear the viewpoints and concerns of all area residents," said DeWayne Comer, district engineer at the Georgia DOT office in Cartersville, in a news release.
The improvements will include the construction of truck passing lanes and intersection improvements along the major thoroughfare.
"The Georgia DOT strongly believes that since this project is intended to serve the people of Cherokee County, the ideas and preferences of these people are important," Comer added. "This meeting will provide the public with an opportunity to review the proposed project, ask questions, and express their preferences as well as their concerns."

The open house will be an informal gathering, and the public can drop in any time between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

GDOT earlier this year completed 4.3 miles worth of truck climbing along Highway 20 between west of Union Hill Road and east of Greenwood Court in the Macedonia community. That project took three years to complete and cost the agency $11.2 million.
In the coming weeks, the agency will begin its quest to improve signage and pavement markings and guardrail and edge line/centerline rumble strip installations throughout various locations on S.R. 20 and S.R. 140.
