Deal Signs Cherokee Tax Measure

In November, voters will be asked to consider a referendum to eliminate the county government portion of the property tax on homeowners through the collection of a one penny sales tax.

Senate Bill 514 will allow the  to ask voters to consider a referendum to eliminate the county government portion of the property tax on homeowners through the collection of a one penny sales tax known as the Homestead Option Sales Tax.

Supporters say it could provide significant tax relief to homeowners while making sure that everyone using county services contributes to the payment of those services.

“The passage of this measure will earn Cherokee County the distinction of having some of the lowest property taxes in the state for home owners,” said Georgia Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers (R-Woodstock), the sponsor of the legislation. “The Homestead Option Sales Tax would also make Cherokee County one of the lowest property tax locations in the entire (state) for our seniors.”
