Council Loses Diversity

Combined, and brought nearly three decades of experience to the Canton City Council.

But when  and  , the six-member council lost more than experience.

It also lost its diversity.

Gone are the only women on the council.

Gone is Tanner, the only African-American.

Neither woman brought up the topic Tuesday night as they left the IHOP, the place where they monitored election returns with Ward II Council member —the only sitting council member who won a re-election bid.

Instead, Rose and Tanner focused on their records.

"I'd like to thank everyone who supported me," Rose told Canton-Sixes Patch. "I enjoyed representing the city and the citizens. And even though I lost the election, I'm a winner in many ways. I've gotten to serve the citizens for 21 years."

Tanner said she will continue to come to council meetings.

"The newly elected council members made certain promises and commitments and have taken certain positions and I'm going to be one of the citizens that holds them accountable," she said. "I may be more of a force outside as a citizen than I was on the council."

She encouraged Huffman and Cummins to "be their own person. Study the issues. Cast their votes independently without being swayed by anyone.

"That's the type of council person I was. Eight years I was an independent voice. I said I was going to be the voice of the people. And I really think that I was. I wish my city nothing but the best the next four years because I may be back in a different capacity."
