City Council Will Take Action on Theatre Renovation Tonight

The proposal to allow the Canton Theatre to show motion pictures is one of the items on the agenda for tonight.

The Canton City Council will decide the fate of a $51,000 amendment to the city budget that would allow for a renovation to the Canton Theatre during their meeting Thursday evening.

The renovation, presented by the Canton Downtown Development Authority's Theater Equipment Committee, would allow the theatre to play motion pictures when it is not being used for stage productions.

The committee estimates it could make a profit of $143 per movie showing, but stresses the real revenues come from corporate sponsorships of movie festivals and companies using the facility and its modern equipment for seminars and other functions.

Should the City Council approve the renovation of the Canton Theatre? Tell us in the comments!

If approved, the renovation would give the theatre at least a 220-inch screen, a 6000 lumen projector, an HDTV receiver, an 18-inch subwoofer, a 1080p high definition digital/audio system with 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound and a touch screen control panel which will integrate the existing light and audio systems. This integration of systems should provide utility for the next 10 years.

In other business, the city council will approve a $30,000 expenditure to replace the city's ailing holiday lights and approve City Manager Scott Wood's choice for Acting City Manager. Additionally, the council will discuss restructuring the city's occupational tax license structure and the proposed bond referendum for the Fire Services Program.

The council will open their meeting at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall. If you can't make it out in person, Canton-Sixes Patch will be providing a live stream of the proceedings for your convenience.
