Church Permit Restricts Alcohol Sales

The Canton City Council grants North Cherokee Church of Christ a conditional use permit for a one year lease at 615 Riverstone Pkwy. An ordinance prohibits alcohol sales within 350 feet of a place of worship.

Other notables:

  • Tuesday, approved a purchase agreement for a new park in Canton. The $401,501.82 agreement for 29 acres on Marietta Highway calls for Canton to contribute $80,300.36. At Thursday night's city council meeting, resident Steve Nelson wanted to know where Canton was going to get the money. "We can't rob Peter to pay Paul," he said. "Peter's broke." Mayor Gene Hobgood said, "Quite honestly, I know we don't know totally where that money's coming from." The closing on the 29 acres is contingent on a boundary survey, environmental clearances and acceptable access. See PDFs for background.
  • Retired city clerk asked council members to keep her on Canton's medical plan instead of switching her to COBRA. Threewitt was the clerk for 21 years, from 1989-2010. The council voted to table the issue for an executive session. See PDF of her verbatim statement to council members.
  • Also delayed was an agreement giving Cherokee County the authority to operate programs at , Harmon Field and a new city park currently being developed on Brown Industrial. See PDF for background.
  • Hobgood said the city has received tentative, verbal approval from the Department of Transportation to hang some turn signals at the intersection of Highway 20 and Governor's Walk. "At least at rush hour," he said, "you can have some left turns. We are working to get those signals designed with turn arrows to make a left turn on Governor's Walk."
